Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
24.82.79.173
Have just bought a new residence and the living room's shape and size will not accomodate my 2.6's.
They will go into storage sadly but I will not make the same mistake of selling them this time.
I am considering a used pair of Reference de Capo 3A's.Have heard these speakers and was very impressed with their open sound (no XO) and tonal beauty.
Any other suggestions from fellow Maggie lovers?
I was panicking about making a choice until I made a decision to store the 2.6's!!
Follow Ups:
Smallish 2 ways with Granite cabinet and stand, $5k. Well balanced, dynamic, holographic sound.I also sold and repurchased 3.6/r because of temporary domestic issues.
lol. I guess the Eminent Technology LFT 8A might be to big for you as well, at 13" wide 60" high. a smaller footprint and they do image better than my MG1 imp. in a smaller room.
You are welcomed to come over for a listen if the mood strikes you.
I have 2 Space Tech Preamps at the moment as a friend needed a place to store his QA 115. Although the QA 111 was a better Match for my Maggies it might not be for my new speakers. If you do get the Reference de Capo 3A's it looks like you could explore using one of Alberts SET Amps with them. His 25 watt Set is very, very good, very Musical. A few of us compared it to his Hybrid and this was the point when I wished my speakers weren't 84 dB.
love to hear your system!!Email me and we can set something up Ken!!

This is a largish bookshelf speaker that that has 21 inch true ribbon mid/tweeter (from 900hz up I believe) and an 8 inch sealed box mid/bass driver. They look really cool because the ribbon is actually on the inside corner of the speaker (where the corner is sliced away to make it flat.) For a smallish speaker I have heard few that are better.Another idea would be an Apogee Centaur minor. This is a small floorstanding ribbon hybrid. Very good sounding ribbon and while no deep bass, solid punch from the sealed box woofer.
both will give you a sound closer to what you are leaving than a Reference 3a speaker.
There is no way I could put these speakers in storage,
no matter how much room they take up.The only speaker I have heard that could take their place is Apogee and they take up the same amount of space.
I will arrange the furniture somehow to make it work.
They are too enjoyable to go without...how spoiled are we!!
Guess whatever makes you fee good...
Scott look into Apogee Stages or the Centaur Minor. The Stage will deliver nearly full-range sound from a quite compact package. Still need space behind them though.
if the 2.6's don't work in my new place I will look into the smaller Apogees.
Don't want to give up the ribbon sound!Which of the smaller Apogees has a smaller footprint?
The Centaur and Slant hybrids have a smaller footprint than the full planar speakers because they are much wider. Obviously, they are shallow I am assuming that width is your main footprint criteria.
Scott 2.6/R without his 2.6Rs? I mean I found myself actually holding my breath a bit as I read the posts starting from the bottom up, only to find you weren't really giving them up or putting them in storage. Shame on you!
on my new place I started to panic because the room is 13 by 17 with all windows on one end and open to dining room at other.I thought they wouldn't work but my room right now is 13x14 and they sound glorious. There will bbe compromises in the furniture layout but my partner loves them as well so we shall see soon.
How is your amp search going?
Not sure of your budget, but being a Maggie die hard too, the following speakers were impressive:
Acoustic Zen
Monitor Audio small floor stander
Klipsh small floor stander (about $450.)
My room-mate had a pair. Ran them with an OTL amp (Transcendent Sound) and they were glorious. I don't think they'll fill a room with presence the way the Maggies will, though. Our room was really small, and it worked great there.Just my $.02
It looks like the cabinet just might wish for some mass-loading and/or Tekna-Sonic and/or BH5. Although, I know my brother liked whar he heard. I think they just might beg for passive-variac pre-amp, SE tube amplifier(s), & magnet wire.
If space is an issue, consider MC1's and a sub.
Just kidding. But seriously folks, our audio group, Gateway Audio Society recently hosted Paul Hilgeman and a pair of his Nomad Ronin speakers. They're a hybrid open-baffle design with a coaxial midrange and tweeter open baffle on top with a 10" woofer in a sealed cabinet for the bass. They imaged very much like maggies in that the open baffle portion couples with the room very similar to maggies. They have an open, airy sound and are quite dynamic also. Paul has a pair touring the country currently with different audio groups. Last I heard they were in Texas. Here's a link to our session with some reactions from the GAS guys. I'll be happy to store your 2.6's until you need them back ;-)

what Maggies are those in the photos?
My IIIA's. They've since been resocked with white sox and I removed the side rais.
I am not sure if you need a small footprint or standmount (I assume the latter). Some options I would look at:o get some of those basketball backboard winches high schools have... and winch the 2.6's up and down as you need them.
o Quad 12L's. Very cheap. Sound great. Beautiful cosmetics. I play mine at modest levels, and they sound wonderful. Not sure if you like it loud though.
o If you like it loud, mod'ed Klipsch Heresy's. Don't laugh. Get a woodworker to build custom cabinets, redo the crossover, and rawk out. These things have their flaws, but they are fun! Apparently the Heresy III is excellent (only heard the I and II). They will also give you something the maggies never had: dynamics (no flames please :-).If you do not need a standmount, some of the smaller Innersound and Newforms may work. Personally, I was not a fan of the Newforms, but people I respect like 'em, and the footprint may work for you.
