Well let me tell you, I have just been rolling various KT88 tubes in my mono blocs, I had been using 6550s.
One particular combination of tubes made my MG12s sound and feel like 12" subs.
They must have reached down into the very low 30Hz with good volume. I could feel the ribbons stretch. I was amazed and blown away.

It's all about getting the right combination. I guess that would apply to about everything hi-fi!
Rectifiers can also make a big difference. I had been using a Mullard 6CA4,then a Amperex Bugle Boy with good results. Then I rewired the socket to accept a 6BW4. Put in a N.O.S. RCA blackplate- HOLY SHIT! 3D, transparency, much better bass and faster.
When you think you've got that magic combo- keep experimenting!
You are right, the rectifiers do make a bit difference. With the KT88s I had to roll back to 5u4g from 5u4gb, as the GBs just gave them too much boom.
.
Thats good to know, I was a little worried :)
