Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
72.73.11.215
Just posted some pictures of my almost finished '63 woofer project in the Inmate Gallery. In the process of rebuilding a pair of USA Monitors, I figured, what
the heck, why not try augmenting the bass with a planar woofer.
Bought 4 blown woofer panels and all the (used) mounting hardware
from QS&D. Mounted the rebuilt panels on top of a beautiful case a
friend made for me.Base includes a 50 watt "plate" amplifier which combines channels and
feeds the signal to two Quad step-up transformers. A 5KVDC supply
provides the polarizing voltage. The combination of the low pass
filter in the plate amp plus an additional two-pole LP filter made up
of resistors, a capacitor and the panels themselves roll off the top
above 100hz. System response goes down into the 30's. As there is no
delay network built into the system, I'm experimenting with the
correct placement of the woofer BEHIND the L/R panels to optimize the
transient response. Sounds REAL nice.Want to put more hours on the panels to flush out potential problems
before putting the grilles back on. Dust covers are
currently "backwards" and held by foam pieces for easy removal.

Very nice looking. I don't even bother with the dust covers until the panels have had a good shake down.If I may ask, what are you using for conductive coating? The bass unit looks like a dark sort of coating. Is this carbon?
