My feeling is that your dealer may be trying to sell you a NEW pair and he KNOWS that used pairs are selling very well on Audiogon for $700 or so LESS than what he can sell them for AND it would be nice for him to have no competition on his sale of a new 1.6 - SOOOO - he puts a bug in your mind that the "newer" 1.6 QR's are "better". To my knowlege the 1.6 has not been upgraded since its introduction. A used 1.6 will also probably be well broken in and sound BETTER than a new 1.6 - (at least until the new one is broken in also)

Could be that there have been improvements in the raw materials that they use, like better quality diaphram material or magnetics. Raw materials manufacturers frequently upgrade their manufacturing processes or formulations.
Man you nailed that one!this is the first I ever heard of a 'new and improved' 1.6.
Ain't happenin'...

he never said it was a new model, he merely stated that newer production 1.6s are better sounding. This is really quite common. Vandersteen, Thiel, and many other high end companies will tell you that they make on going production changes over the years to a given models with out changing the model number. Several manufactures even told me that their current production sounds WAY better than earlier production. So my question is not without precedence.
sorry;
