At my Brother-In-Law's wake last week my sister told me an interesting little story. She and her daughter were with him when he took his last breath. When they looked over they saw his right arm folded across his chest so that the right hand rested on the left shoulder.
There, plain as day, was his hand formed into that universal symbol - the one-fingered salute!

Follow Ups:
I wonder who his salute was intended for.
directed at anyone in particular. I DO know that he was not about to give up the battle until the very end.Maybe he was telling us that you could kill him but not his spirit.
(no religious inferences implied)(By me, anyway)

But I imagine he had a lot of the world's sins in mind at that point. It sounds like he was an amazing fellow...
A previous post. Over 300 people came to the wake and, AFAICT, none knew he had a Bronze Star.

The fact that he made no bones of his medal is what makes him a great man in my book.
It's the individual "character" of such folk that help our memories of them live on, and have us pause and quietly smile whenever their names are mentioned...
