I'm looking for a nice hybrid bike for the wife to use around the hood, short trips on bike trail, maybe a dirt road, but nothing serious. This Trek goes for around $400, has seat post and front suspension, looks about right, and is a model carried by a friend.. and yes, she'll try them out first.. She was used to a Schwinn hybrid from about 10 yrs ago. This should be a step up. Better alternatives to try?

And like it well enough. My only reservation is that I would like to get the fattest tires available for a more cushioned ride, but the frame in front of the rear tire blocks that option. The thinner tires of the hybrid don't ride as comfortably as my trail bike, but I'm glad I switched. As you note, trying it out is the only true way of finding out. The 7100 was a step up from my Trek trail bike, though. I like the brand very much. 2 bought in 5 years and both still fully functional.
Let us know the next step. I'm curious.
Looking at the frame geometries, for my money, I'd pass on the WSD model. Doesn't look strong enough for hybrid use.
agree.. plus I thought it was ugly.
and you said that it's a model carried by a friend. So that should settle it right there. It's good to support friends.
than what you are looking at. My guess is you'd be O.K.
