Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago,
and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids. What the hell happened? Can you spell "politicians!"
Follow Ups:
I especially love road taxes, even though I only get to use a highway whenever I'm naughty and sneak out.Oh well ... I can still salute and vote from in here when they remove this jacket. What's that Nurse Ratched? Time for meds again?
Sounds like a personal problem, that you want to treat as SOMEONE ELSES Problem! aka as an SEP!Which it isn't, wasn't, and can't ever be!
Oh yes, I remember, bugger all of you actually vote. But, if you do vote, Sherod. WHY are you complaining??! Eh?
Again, this would be better off over at Water Cooler!

it is a Republic. Secondly - the tax code is up to some 64,000 pages and every time someone tries to simplify it they are castigated. Third - I thought the post was meant to be taken in a (somewhat) humorous vein

I'm not trying to make this seem as a complaint. Only making a point of what has happened in the U.S. this last century regarding taxes, being since this was tax filing time here in the good ole USA. However, if this thread should be in the Water Cooler forum, then please send it there. Have a great day, Mate!
In America, you have politicians looking out for ways to limit taxes in some cases in order to stimulate economic growth. Not always for the benefit of the proletariat, but occasionally it does trickle down. In Britain and it's colonies however, their tradition of taxation is thus: The king/queen is off establishing new colonies/conducting another war/building a new palace, so find something new to tax, economic growth be damned. Not quite that bad, but at least the Yanks have the right concept :-)
"Right-to-work" tax.If you have a job, you pay $15 for that right!
Cool, eh?

If I had more money I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LPs!
In PA, the "Lords of the Commonwealth" have decreed that municipalities can tax you up to $52 for the privilege of earning the money you pay your taxes with in their town or city. Lancaster also has a per capita tax of $10 for the privilege of living there.Didn't Philly have some type of occupational tax on the amount of money you earned in the city? I remember talk about taxing out of town professional athletes based on the percentage of the money they earned while playing in the city. A football player visiting The Linc for one game would be taxed on 1/16 of his annual salary. Don't remember hearing how that worked out.
