Some of them looked damned interesting.

Follow Ups:
That one with the "Turtle Island String Quartet" covering some Coltrane material and the "Scott Colley" CD.
I have exactly one Turtle CD (with Paquito D'Rivera) but I've heard plenty of radio cuts - enough so that I'd like to get some more.
Colley I've not heard of before but the review and the line-up make me think I'd like to give that a shot. The review that took me by surprise was the Recording of the Issue. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible. Never heard of them. Then I got to the part that said "sound of seven young Canadians". So where have I been? That group sure as hell wasn't on the Canuck music (Juno) awards last week-end. Not that I'd be interested in their music particularly but I'd like to think I have my finger on a pulse in Canadian music once in a while.
And now - back to my morning project - between loads of laundry. I've stacked two pairs of DynacoA25s. I'd been listening to one stereo pair - tweeters set to the outside. [you need to at least two pairs to make up a stereo pair - I, garage saler extraordinaire, have 4 pair. You always find matching, not stereo, pairs so that the tweeter on one side is to the inside and the other side has the tweet to the outside.]
So, this morning it occurred to me to flip another pair on top, upside down of course, woofer on the top and the tweeters set to the inside this time.
I'm telling ya boys - it ain't so bad. Driven from a Dynaco St70 - which might not be enough. I may take those speakers upstairs, pull out the LS3/5As and try the stack with the QUAD 405-2.It certainly is interesting!!

my first real speaker. Been thinking about building a "nostalgia system" - the A25s, with a Dynaco SCA-80Q integrated "quadraphonic" amp and an AR-XA turntable. Ahh, the good ole days.Of course, then I'd have to get some bell bottoms, tie-dyed shirts, rolling papers and patchouli incense to re-create the REAL college experience. And lose 50 pounds.

I have and use a DynacoST-70, am trying to get a local guy to sell or trade for a Dynaco Pas3 pre-amp, have an AR77Xb table on the shelf and, as mentioned, four pairs of Dynaco A25s!
I have noticed that bell-bottoms and tie-dye is very much back "in". As for that "lose 50 lb" part - Sure!. Not gonna' happen though. 30 maybe - and my doctor would love me for that - but 50 tain't a gonna' happen anytime soon.

I'll have a great nostalgia system. The Scott 222 and the Planex planars...all I need is an oldie but goodie TT...but I'm not looking until that Scott is fixed.Right now, the planars are being driven by that teensy little Dared amp I reviewed a while back and decided to keep...only because the Scott was gone and I needed SOMETHING! The Dared's a great little amp, but I'd like to hear it against the Scott.
I do have to say that both the Dared and the Scott made beautiful music with the Planex speakers. Sound derived from Comcast's Music Choice. I'm aching to hear a good old 'table with the Scott, though.
Then the Dared will drive the Michael Greene's that have sat in my bedroom unconnected for a year...along with (hopefully) my Audio Alchemy CDP...which I'll replace with something much more modernesque.
Then there will be a system in the bedroom, in the living room, in the game room and in the listening room. Hmmm...what about the kitchen and the garage...and then, when I get a porch roof...
It never ends, do it?

NT.
Try finding decent, affordable caps for a QUAD 405 sometime. Like 10,000uF and 63v in a size that fits that space should be hard to find. But they are - oh yes they are!

What happened to the resourcefulness that developed Canada?...What happened to the independence of thought that allowed the Frisians to adopt "appelgebak met slagrom" as it's national dish**?...
** Yes, I realise that such possibilities may not have occurred as any sort of sensible proposition to other countries, but that's their problem!...
Why not simply fit sufficient capacitors to achieve the desired total capacitance, if necessary by fabricating separate modules in which the capacitors would be contained?...
I don't know!!... Today's generation?... They need spoon-feeding with everything!... When I were a lad, things were different...
were oil-in-paper and nothing Jeff found would fit into the cans. He wanted (and I did too, of course) to keep the original look of the amp. He thought he'd string them underneath if he had to but kept looking for oil-in-paper caps with the same specs or close to those specs rather than using modern caps. The last time we talked he thought he'd located some...I haven't called him for a while.

of paper-in-oil caps, then you will indeed be likely to find - since these are usually the "beefy" sized options - few options that will fit a confined space...Bearing in mind the relatively low "guaranteed to spec" lifetimes of paper-inb-oil caps, I would bite the bullet and wire up a separate ganged module of modern PIO caps to achieve the required overall capacitance if I felt than the generally rather smaller film/foil caps would significantly degrade the sound characteristics I was trying to achieve...
Whichever option you choose, I wish you the best of luck in achieving your targeted delivery of sounds!...
IE a 'clone' II.This just MIGHT - IIRC - change the cap rq't OR make it worse!?
;-)!
IME well worth seeking out and doing!
the 405II was a big step forward, in PRAT! Into dynamic spkrs. BA diff into 63's IMO&E. First QUAD SS amp I really LIKED into 57's!
57's and 63's just SINGGG on* most valve amps from 10 to 100wpc, BTA even a LEAK St20 - in OEM SPEC - will still KILL a pr of QUADII's into 57's. IMO&E!
*and pure CLASS-A SS up to about 50WPC. A pr of 57's and a STAX DA80, really can ROCKKKKKK.
Crowbar protection mods are a GOOD idea for amps driving ELS's. Both 405's had this ..... I THINK!
