I was doing some casual research into Jewish history and found out that there was in fact a Jewish community in China. It seems they assimilated almost totally to the point where there is hardly any trace of them today, but I was very surprised to find out that they had traveled so far.

I remember reading a book about Jewish communities in Japan. I'm Japanese, my gf was Jewish, her Dad made me read it.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I'd be interested to know if any vestiges of Jewish culture exist such as synagogues and the like, or if the Jewish population assimilated as they did in China.

Seems to me I was watching a documentary that indicated there is a conclave in (perhaps) Calcutta.
But I suppose we should be no more surprised about this kind of thing than we are about the Christians or Buddhists or whatever showing up in places we wouldn't expect them to be. Religion can be a touch invasive.

There is a Jewish section in the city of Shanghai. People running from Nazi Germany made it all the way there!
I'd never heard that. I wonder if they ever knew about their ancestors' communities. I think I read that there was an ancient synagogue which was in ruins somewhere in China.
