Actually, I have no idea if this one is a lady turkey or a dude turkey... but s/he was in the back yard the other day. Mrs. H, a supremely skilled and avid birder - even though she couldn't ID said large gallinacious avian's gender - snapped a few photos.Turkeys are hardly uncommon in MA, but this is the first one I've seen on the ground in our yard in 16 years here. I DID see one high up in a tree early one spring morning some years back -- at the time, I didn't know they even did that :-)
Follow Ups:
The turkey population where I am originally from in Ontario (Prince Edward County) was non-existent 3 decades ago.
At the back of our farm is a conservation area where the Fish and Wildlife guy released 20 birds back in 1989.
These days it is not unusual to see flocks of over a hundred birds in the grain stubble. They're everywhere .
A prodigious growth pattern to say the least. Even with some natural predators (coyote & fox and a spring shoot) the populations continue to grow.
Same goes for a number of other bird species that just weren't there when I was a kid. Eagles, vultures, swans, cranes...a lot.
The link below gives a list of comfirmed sightings in the area. There's a lot there I've never seen!

They are! As beautiful as they are....We had 3 or 4 just strolling down our street one day and when anyone got within 100' pf them they attacked as a gang... I swear I saw them wielding guns too.
I live in Rhode Island so I have seen that species around several time over my carreer of life.

the Males (Toms) have a "wattle" hanging below their necks (Beard). At last count we have 22 full grown wild turkeys wandering in our (and neighbor's) woods - 18 of them yearlings that we caught (saw)in different stages of growing up. They are basicly fearless and will walk right up the driveway

Sounds like you need to take up turkey hunting. Wild turkeys
can be tasty as long as they have not been eating wild onions.
a totally different....er...wait....ummm....sorry. Carry on.

I don't see a beard.....but I could be wrong.
large bands of large turkeys walking everywhere, in a field I saw about eighty at one time displaying recently (the males anyway). They are kind of interesting to see, but they make the dogs bark whenever they are around.
