Ken Kesey. "Sailor Song".Get this book, it is phenomenal. The long, drawn out descriptions of what each part of a sailing vessel is (via the pop/adventure authors) are missing. Instead, you are given a character that's been fishing for 20 years and knows what the hell he's doing...no need for education, just the painting of the character.
Situations that are nearly as believable as they are hilarious...or ominous; reactions that make sense for the character you've come to know through Kesey's descriptions. Kesey doesn't spend a huge amount of time with each scene, just enough that you get to paint that scene in your head; a rarity in today's books.
I think that anyone will be impressed by this book as it is a great read, but people who have read Kesey may think like I do, that it surpasses anything he ever wrote, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". And this excellent authorship from a guy that some say is burnt out.
Get this book! I haven't enjoyed a book this much in many years, as a reader and as a writer.

If I had more money I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LPs!

Another great one - more about sailing - is Joshua Slocum's account of his slow / carefully interrupted circumnavigation "Sailing Alone Around the World". In the late 19C or early 20C IIRC> He has to restore the wooden sail-boat first!

What did I just say? Oh, yeah. I mean, like, I can't be bothered by a simple book, you know. I have to have my senses crammed 24/7 with, like, nonsensical bullshit from the latest and greatest electronic neo-POS gadget just so I can, like, stay in touch with "The Real World". Like.Sorry. I really wanted to go on an anti-technology rant back there as I've had it "up to here" with all the over-exposed, over-commercialized, and over-consumed shit that keeps coming out that serves no function whatsoever other than to justify its own existence . (Did I need an apostrophe in that sentence? If so, tough....) Every time I turn around lately it seems I am bombarded by a "You need this or you will be left behind" message, and not just from the television or radio....
Do you remember Timothy Leary's "turn on, tune in, and drop out"? I don't, I'm too young. And while I don't mean to forward the argument that taking illegal drugs is acceptable, I've been thinking alot about what we have become and where we are going as a Society, and I think it's time we started using those words towards a new purpose.
End of mild rant.
Ergo grex, ergo sum.
...but I still want an iPhone when it comes out. Man those are sexy. And just think how cool I'll look when people see me posing with the thing in public. Oh yeah.

And, politicians stopped meaning anything a long time back.

...the best mystery book I've read in a while is "The Persuader" by Lee Child. It's part of his Jack Reacher series and if you like this kind of stuff, read one and you'll be hooked.
My previous favorites were the Spenser series by Robert Parker.
is that they are funny and keep you reading for long stretches of time. Aside from that they are okay. Thanks for the tip!
