Is this possible? My wife's phone was stolen but my sister in law and others have offered to give her their old phones. My wife is with T-Mobile but her sister used US Cellular. My wife got a new sim card. Do the sim cards fit in different phones? She can't get a free phone but at least it wouldn't cost a whole lot to get a new one.
Follow Ups:
Some phones are locked into certain providers so y0u can't easily use them outside of the company from which they were bought. I think this is when you buy a plan in which you get the phone very cheaply in exchange for signing up for multi year service. In that case the phone bought can't be used with any old SIM card. However one can buy unlocked phones or unlock existing phones in some circumstances - there's whole web sites devoted to the black art.
I recommend just tring it and seeing if it works. The only other thing I can see being a hindrance is the type of phone service - GSM, CDMA, etc. I don't know if the US carriers have standardised on a single system, or whether they all use different systems.
They can be unlocked, but generally speaking, each phone is locked to a provider. Verizon doesn't have sim cards, but you could buy some else's Cingular phone and plug in any Cingular sim card.If the sim card fits, try it. I suspect you'd need to unlock the phone to make it work. It might be eaiser to check e-Pay for used T-Mobile phones.
