not at all surprised?I noted this little news item while I was looking at the "Madonna" story that Brian posted.
Rap music sales down? That just breaks my heart that does.

Follow Ups:
The rap and/or hiphop grammy winner for the last ten years. I'm so exited, I gave my 'table to the guy and traded my Anthem for a Sony receiver. I'm selling the Monarchy amps to a guy for some good chewing tobacco and a large C&W CD collection. I bought some early 90's Klipsch speakers, you know, the ones that are made of plastic...the enclosure AND the drivers.I even got him to throw in some lamp cord to hook the speakers to the Sony. He traded me stright up for a new J.C. Penneys CD player for my Audio Alchemy CDP.
I'm so excited I could plotz!
****
If I had more money I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LPs!
If only you could have waited, I would have given you your choice of any ten of my CDs, and I would even have thrown in that copy of Anita Bryant's Kisses Sweeter Than Wine that you've been searching for. You remember, the one that you swore sounded so much better on CD than on your own vinyl issue?
If you ever trade away all of your Vinyl w/o consulting those of us waiting in the wings, I'll "plotz" you, young man!
Ergo grex, ergo sum.
because Fox News always lies.
there IS good work done within hip-hop and rap. They even get me to listen, and I do. It doesn't make me buy it, mind.A long time ago I read an article by one of Aus's more sane and centred music and drama critics that any large pop-genre (with large no's of performers) can and ought to produce roughly 95/5 crap/art, just because some of them will have talent!
Not all of it is mysogynistic, gunny, or gangsta rap.
And, they have managed to convince me that some of it has merit - to them - and I do respect their own judgements. (Even about Southpark and the Simpsons - which I don't really LIKE, but can tolerate as one-offs.)
One group which I'm not at all sure is rap or hip-hop, but whose songs at least give me hope for this generation is ROTM.

'Still not saluting.'
But it is at least predominantly misogynistic and violent. It's mostly just attitude, and all claims that it merely *reflects* life in the ghetto are bogus. If things are so bad, and you're aware of that fact, change it, don't piss and moan to me about it.In the 90s there was a movement towards more intelligent and almost literate rapping, with some genuine jazz influences, much of it quite enjoyable. But once the record companies saw that the more negative stuff was selling, they simply saturated the market with it, obliterating the better quality stuff.
And as for your centred critic, he's no doubt heard of the infinite monkeys writing Shakespeare theory ;-)
I have been known to listen to Ludacriss for a very short period of time. I was mildly interested in some of eminem's work, though. He seemed to be a tad more creative than many of the others.
Yeah, at least Eminem had some self-depreciation in his lyrics and you could tell that there was a brain at work at least some of the time there, although a lot of it veers towards pure vitriol unfortunately. To me the worst of rap hop is like the worst of country music today, in that it essentially says "I'm a dimwit and proud of it, with no intention of changing."
that such reports indicate that there are indeed limits to both the public's gullibility and their bad taste in modern music...Sadly, I have the distinct feeling that such hopes would be decidedly premature...
You know how it is, about the time grownups learn of something that kids are doing, whatever is is that they were doing is no longer cool.Anyone notice that TAS recently started reviewing rap and hip-hop?

as to me such concepts have always implicitly meant that there is some group standard or cultural implication involved...I have always been happier in understanding the reasons for my own opinions, rather than feeling any necessity whatsoever of obtaining any form of group approval from like-minded folk...
This is probably just yet another case of "different folks, different strokes"...
Bill.
but returned to normal after the car warmed up. ;~)I guess I did a lousy job of expressing an observation, Bill. Oh well.
But Bruce, I was simply giving my own individual reaction...For the rest of humanity, your observations may have generated entirely different results!...
Have a good week-end...
