where has revjac been? Is anyone sure millen really posted anything?

I's been plenty busy. I went on my semi-annual pilgrimage all the way downtown to the two major "high fidelity" stores where I was (again) promptly ignored for a bit over a half an hour at the first (and some, but not I, would say pre-eminent) establishment. And it wasn't like the joint was busy nor were they short of "staff". Even so, I got to look, without any help, at that swank ClearAudio Statement magnetic drive turntable that cost somewhere in the region of at least a couple three Escalades.
But I think we all know what I really saw at that store.
Then I went to the other store where I was at least acknowledged by several of the staff. They were even so kind as to drop an SRV CD into some really swank CD player and play "Tin Pan Alley" through a pair o' them big Wilson speakers driven by equally costly Krell amps and the signal travelled through some outrageously e$pensive wire.
Now, given, I'm not a big fan of either the speakers or the amps but I've only heard them once before. And they are a wee bit better than the last time but not much.
What I did notice is that Mr. Vaughn plays the Biggest Guitar ever I heard. Them speakers was about 3m apart, toed-in a lot and Stevie's axe was all the way from speaker to speaker.
[I did throw on the same CD when I got home to see if was the mix or the gear]
I'd never quite noticed how that song had been mixed before now. Guitar right up front of everything, Stevie's voice back by the bass player, Tommy's bass stayed in the same spot and rock steady, Chris's drum kit was every bit as big as SR's guitar.
I really didn't like it all that much. And it took over a hundred thousand bucks worth of gear to point it out. Damn.
But the staff were nice guys. Not pushy but fun to chat with. Although a little bit "our gear is the best gear and everybody else's isn't quite" - if you know what I mean. And I've been running the Cornwalls through some test tones compliments of some Sterophile test CDs someone was kind enough to loan me. I'm not finished there yet - only enough to say I can't hear SFA up there somewhere above/around 14khz. And the tweeters can do much above 16 either.
Chuck the Tube Tech called to say one of my Dynacos is cleared for take-off so I'll be picking that up Thursday. I've spent the rest of my time searching for info about the Dynaco ST70 conversion to 6B4G tubes (that's my other amp that's in for a check-up) and searching high, low and sideways for some decently priced 7199 tubes for that amp. (I know where there's a half dozen pairs in another store town but I ain't talking or doing business with that guy for the time being.and that's it for me - got 'nuff info? Sorry I've been MIA. This audio stuff will do that to a guy! As we well know.

In that respect life's very much easier for us "classical" fanatics, in that there is (since Berlioz) a lot of standardisation in terms of the layout for the instruments within a symphony orchestra...I wish you joy in your search for your desired valves ("tubes")... I have assembled my personal stocks of my ECC88 and E88CC choices in a small, fire-proof case... According to the manufacturer, I have sufficient to cater for my requirements (and continuous use!) until well beyond 2030, which is, perhaps, rather more than I might need...
That'll get ya bout to the time that asteroid is gonna hit..Gotta turn it up reaaaal loud then..
I listen (primarily) to classical and the test of the mettle of any system I check out is how it places the symphony in the soundstage.
Unfortunately, this pilgrimage was sort of unplanned and I didn't have any of my music with me. [I had other, unrelated, business downtown and, to be honest, sort of played the role of slacker after the business was done and went audio gazing.]
And speaking of tubes, I have my little hard won collection from the 6DJ8 family delicately wrapped and stored in a crush proof, velvet lined box. I'm sure there's enough there to keep me for a decade or two as well. I hope anyway.
