with reflex, AJ 5.0 seems very touchy with regards to:vent and damping specificationhere's 175l for 2220H vs 3015LF using spec posted below with some rear damping to keep peaking down
how do you keep AJ happy on reflex?
sim HERE Red=3015LF
Follow Ups:
I have spent half my life on reflex boxes---all the T-S stuff, and I wound up with horns.
I’ve been listening to an acoustic suspension for several months and find the bass very articulate. Now it doesn’t have the punch of a Karlson but that is most likely caused by the huge peak at 80-100hz followed by a huge dip at 200-400 hz. But if a person wants articulate even toned bass that match mid-sized rooms very nicely they should reconsider\revisit a true acoustic suspension. To get this design working properly a special woofer is needed. One with a very loose, floppy suspension and high Vas. These types are hard to find and typically associated with low efficiency systems but I happened to locate a few higher sensitivity models that are very close. HTML tag not allowed
One of my favorite speakers is the larger Advent. With a bi-filer voice coil on a copper bobbin, this woofer is second to none.A sealed box also has good phase response, and no one note bass sound.
If they just had more dynamic range....
Obviously horns win hands down with dynamic range. If you have a chance to pick up an EV DL15W plop it in a 3-5 cubic foot closed box and see what you think. The box won't add any dynamic rang so it's limited to the woofer and it's motor.
whatcha using for sealed box woofer? - (does aperiodic help?)K's dips might be mitigated on graph to some extent by fudging with baffle angle. I get a sense of real power with K15 and K18 with 200-300W peaks, modulation distortion seems reduced and cone control much better than reflex.
maybe a new coupler with ~22 degrees baffle angle, a bit more height to maintain front compliance and volumes, side-gapped vents and muck with reflector? (keep rear lowpass choke)
1/24 K15 with Altec 416 tilted forwards - looks like port may be doing some fill
1/24 Acoustic Control tilted forwards - 115BK has one flat board reflector
at my krib = 3-Klipsch-horn,2-Sentry IV, 2-FH1, one Edgarhorn system 100 w. monolith, 2-JBL 12" in 5.6ft path front-load - then half-horn = Aristocrats, RCA-Fan V-vent, then about 40 Karlson - which of course belong to magical catagoryplain reflex - 4638 hooked up once - reflex are boring and 1-note = torture
I just want my $130 simulator to work !!!
i dunno.. for some applications, what other alternative is there-- especially small spaces? i'd prefer slightly less defined bass to closed boxes offering 55 hz and above for a 2 way. just don't like the sub 'sound', or at least imperfectly implemented ones (the perfect ones are.. well.. BIG!).. besides, the other tenet of speaker building is 'good implementation is everything', or in other words, don't plant a banana tree in antarctica, right?i know you're a drum freak too.. so tight low bass is super important.. but i know i do alright (for myself, at least) for the vaster majority of music i love with a pair of 414's in br boxes! wish i had room in my little 800 cu/ft house for some big horns though.. but even still.. them little altec boxes sound pretty good- and i don't think they could be accused of one note bass in any way shape or form.
BUT.. there's definitely volume limitations before they go apeshit too.. gladly, i never hit that threshold in my small space-- but if you do.. i'm with ya that reflex suck! chuffa chuffa ..
Well, I believe, cutting wood+ measure is the way to go.
I have found no substitute for building the box.. Sims are approximate.
I must say. I would like to see more real world tests of various designs, from whoever.
my joints are locked, in pain and am 'bout dead - but if something gets built then will drag it out and do measurements and hopefully a bit more intense in scope - I rarely see any measurements of fullrange BLH stuffhey - I put a few graphs up besides sims
I am just a measurement guy.
Non offense meant.
Really, I would like to see a curve of a 50Hz horn---buy anybody to learn from.
All I want is cello curve which corresponds to what you hear,.Bill
there's someone who has a specialist company called "Acoustichorn" who knows that stuff real well - perhaps as well as anyone living - - maybe he'll help?I love cello and bass-viola - Klipschorn gets kinda rough on those...
