You need roughly four 6" woofers to equal one 12" woofer. The throat size is set by the B/L and mass, and Fs of any particular woofer.
X-max and piston area determine the maximum acoustic output. So you can put about 50 watts into one 6" woofer (BC) Vs 800 watts or so into a lab 12. ( much mor x-maX too)
Note however that you can get 104 dB/ 60Hz out of one 6" woofer in about 8 cft. If you use two, it jumps to 106dB ( in corner) with 100 watts power handling. This is 127 dB at 128 watts.
The 12 will give you ( 104 db@60Hz 12cft) 131db @ 512 watts.
The 80 to 500Hz range will be much clearer than the higher mass 12"Expressed another way, if the horn were straight, and you played a cello- the 6" will sound better. Nice to add one of TD's 15Hz tapped monsters with it
My own take is that I want to get to 50Hz with good efficiency, and want the lighter cone for the mids.
Just my taste after all these years with the high power PA stuff.
Also my ears need a break.
Follow Ups:
(a guess at taste in the 21st century from car audio subs = " whats a cello? "8 cubic foot seems like a good size for 50Hz and reasonably high sensivity and potential to lift and ship -?
I have a CH250 10" on cardboard open baffle - its gets into trouble on drum tracks with my almost-dead ears at 7 inches - not even a headphone - It should play cello by low-end specs but can't.
long live good horn art (az if I practiced that...)
floor and wall 100 watts is all the 6 can take
COOL-----can a LAB12 be clamped to K-slot BLH and work well at high input power to make a nice little sub?
I think it may be too big...try a simulation
this was a guestimate wiht red = Lab12 - does the entry look ballpark?
yes except for the spl. notice how excursion goes down with rear chamber
drivers input set at 20v - your BLH as FLH makes a pretty graph with LAB12. Does the 88 sq.cm. entry into expansion present any problem at high power?btw -why did AJ show a Bose cannon type to look better with driver 1/3 way down pipe than 1/4 down?
