I find this a little confusing. Being that the raw HF driver has considerable roll-off by today's standards, particularly off axis, the only source for any brightness that I can think of is mismatched levels with the LF. What were you using for crossovers? If there was a HF level adjustment, did you try different settings? Of all the likely criticisms this is not one of them IMO. I can't imagine having them at the floor level near a carpet unless they were angled up and I was listening from 20 feet away.

Where was the HF level set?
With the speaker at ear level, I tried all positions of the dial. With the speaker nearer the floor, the dial was at it's mid point.
