Hi:Does anyone have an opinion of where the JBL 077 / 2405 ranks as a super-tweeter? I tested many tweeters, both vintage and modern, for my two-way OB system and chose the Jensen RP302. I recently heard a large, all-JBL system that used 077s for super-tweeters and was impressed with the high frequencies.
Spec-wise, the 077 is quite a bit more sensitive than the RP302 but doesn't go as low. In my situation, neither matters because I don't need either the higher sensitivity or the lower crossover point. OTOH, the 077 is probably more extended. Do you think it would be worth giving the 077 a shot? The required baffle cutout is about the same for each, so I should be able to just swap it in. Thanks.

Hello GerryAfter about 22-22K it drops like a proverbial rock so it's not a "super tweeter" with usable output going out past 30K. If you want a good sounding high output driver to cover say 8-9K and up it's great driver. Do not go for 077's unless you have to have them. They are identical to the 2405 except for the acrylic lense. You can get 2405's for much less.
definition of the term "super-tweeter", crossed over in the 7 - 9K range. Also, it's good that you mentioned the 2405. It confirms what my friend Don (aka "Dr. Field Coil") said: "nobody can hear any difference between them". I think I will give the 2405 a shot. Thanks Robert!
Which is my current x-over freq [with L-pad (on open baffle/two way)]. Never a hurry for me, just gettting around to trying some 12"s on my O.B. (been flying 8" fullrangers for two years). After only four days of course, still sorting the location of the high pass. Was looking at the spec/pdf and doesn't look like much wiggle room at the bottom of the driver's range. Had no plans to buy/eval a pair soon, but like many ... try to get my possible ducks lined up a bit in advance (fairly content with my current, but do have a short list of possibles I wouldn't mind giving a spin/eval).
Next tuning will be slightly taller baffles, going with a little higher mounting of the 12". For perhaps a little less floor reinforcement/lighter balance (possibly don't need the twelves, tens may be better?).
If you look JBL used them down to 6500k in the L65 Jubal with a 12db network. In the original Everest its a 12db at 7500Hz. In the 4344/45 they used 18db @ 9khz. You might want to switch to 12db but depending on how much power you feed them?? The response drops off below 6K as it is so driving them harder than you need to below that doesn't make too much sense. You don't want to unnecessarily fatigue the diaphragms at $100 a pop. About the worst thing that can happen is you will just have to pony up for another pair of diaphragms earlier than you would have using steeper slopes.
I don't play loud with my eight watts (or in turn my small 98 db L-padded hf horns/paired with current 94 db woof). Possibly the wider freq range of the other JBL drivers that the 2405 is usually inclusively 'grouped' with (2402, and 2404), may lend itself to greater suitability (who knows). They all have their admirers (and of course detractors). At least looks like I won't blow the 2405 up if I give it a spin (I will keep it on the list). Now feeling my way around/sorting form factor (do I need/want a twelve inch driver?). Before moving on/up/out/away/along the musical trail (maybe giving electromotors a spin/whirl/listen next?).
