I have a multimeter, and very basic knowledge of electronics. I've never built anything mains-powered.For me, is there an easy way to tell what the imput impedance of amp X is, so I can build a PLLXO to suit it?
...or would finding the amp's input impedance require more skill on my part (that is, knowing the schematic / understanding the layout of the amp)?

In my experience 12dB/octave PLLXO gives a fair bit of loss in the pass band, so make sure you have plenty of gain. or use 6dB/octave.Do you have the specifications for the amp?

The easiest method I could think of:
You would need some kind of signal generator maybe a CD with a constant test tone.
Beware the multimeter may not be as accurate at higher frequencies.
Connect a series resistor between the signal generator and the amp.
Measure the voltage (AC millivolts) across the amp input and across the resistor.
Change the value of the series resistor until the voltages are the same.
When the voltages are the same, the value of the series resistor = the amp input impedance.
if he used a variable resistor a constant voltage in and rotate the poy until the voltage in and out are equal.
