I know this is a much-discussed topic, but I'd be interested in what options people recommend for substitutions for the Klipsch K55-V and the variety of horns to which it can be attached--K-400, Altec 511B, ALK Engineering Trachorn.
Many use various Altec (288 series, 902 series, 511B, 1005) or JBL (don't know where to start here) drivers and horns, but many of these have a 500Hz cut-off spec while the K-hoprn is supposed to cut off at 400 Hz. Is this a problem? Can it be gotten round with custom crossovers?

i have k-horns , and use them with orphean of bd design. sounds great.
if it's too expensive for you, you can buy bms4590 and jabo horns at ebay germany, the crossoverplan you find on german forums. that may give one of the very best combintations. i use trends's class T amp, wich cobines great to drive the mid-high horns.
I used the SM-120 years ago on LaScalas (with the stock Klipsch drivers), it's much wider dispersion meant less midrange enrgy on axis and thus relieved the "flamethrower" effect of the K-400. It also helped with imaging though I wouldn't claim it would help imaging in your room, how particular horns interact with particular rooms can vary greatly.EV used the SM-120 down to 400hz.

What is next, Bose claiming to have mediocre speakers?????
I am going to build my bomb shelter now.
if one already has alnico JBL LE5 then consider a Bruce Edgar style (or Bruce's horn) ~250Hz tractrix with say 9"x18" mouth and 2.5"x2.5" throat.Look at Bruce's article on Volotreter's downloads (and note an error for plate length) Maybe someone here has suggestions of other cone drivers which can work.
I'd like to know which in-production cones can work to ~5Khz.
Sometimes a driver must be gapped from the throat to prevent peaking near cutoff and Bruce described that in his Speaker Builder article.
ALK's horn looks nice for retrofit. 511 may do ok and work with FH1 type. Tom Danley's Unity type would be good but not sure if sensitivty would match with passive networds (???) K400 sounds better to me without any grille cloth.
One of Bruce's 250Hz horns from long ago

Have you ever tried a 45 amp with your Khorns? - Khorns are not very forgiving and I find a 45 amp is a lot 'purer' than others. What amp are you running in trying to get these things to sound OK?

Hi,Sorry I didn't get back to you. I had several solid state amps--Hafler DH 220 and GAS Grandson, Dynaco 210, etc., then I switched over to tubes. With my K-horns, the only tube amps I used were Dynaco Mk IIIs and my current amp, an ARC VT-100. The ARC is by far the best sounding of the bunch.
I know you to be a great fan of SET amps. but I have yet to audition one in my system. I use the Blueberry Xtreme peramp, and I'm pleased with its sound.
I'd like to hear a SET amp. so if any of you are in the Pittsburgh, PA region and have a Welbourne DRD 45, maybe we could get together for a listening session?Best,
George,If I were you, I'd try to solve your 'problem' with an amp instead of speaker mods. It's much easier also, as amps are much smaller. I'd suggest getting a hold of a SET amp and try it on your speakers. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.our
Your Khorns are very efficient and are unforgiving of amplifiers. Post this on the Klispch forum and see if there is anyone in your area that has a SET amp.

I use the Altec 1005Bs and 288-16K. I notice no 'gap' from 400-500 hz. - I know what the specs are (supposed to be) - but I don't listen to specs. I'm more than satisfied! If you are ever in Minneapolis area, I'll give you a demo!

Beautiful system. What are you using as crossover networks in your system?
It's a modified Klipsch Type 'A' - It is set to roll off the Mid Range at 6,000 hz

Greets!500 Hz horns are really pushing it IMO. A 311-90/300-400 Hz with super tweeter makes more sense to me.
Hi GM, I agree, I had the Speakerlab Ks for a bit and hooked up a 311 on one of them just as an A/B and it was night and day. I did end up trading the Speakerlabs for a 300B amp, but if was going to keep them, I would have bought a pair of 311 off eBay and made it a permenent switch. Cheers.
Have a heart for those of us not "in-the-know. What is a "311"? Driver? Horn? What are you talking about?
Greets!Sorry, it's a 1.4" throat Altec expo sectoral horn:

Many thanks for this clarification. I will look into it.
the 331-90 horn plus 299 or 288 driver combo is kinda pricey though...you might check out the alk horn stuck unto the existing klipsch driver. regards, tony
