caps are original. bass is wooley, K400 sounds shrill. a kluged 70's model w/o any grill cloth plus piezo sounded a bit better.
Follow Ups:
Hi Freddiy, from everyone I've talked to (I had Khorns for a long time), the newer network from the factory did not need improvement. There have been many drivers tried on the folded horn and the K33 is still the best. That cab will sound woofy if you do not have it TIGHT (with foam seals) into a corner or with a built fake wall. You shoudl replace that tweet with the Beyma CP25, and you should coat the midhorn with damping material. Also, don't expect too much around 400hz...that cab will not produce it. Cheers,.
sometime in the late 1980's and ran 250Hz tractrix with LE5, T-35 or ring radiator back at the midhorn's plane, and tried 2220H and K43 - amps were D90, GSI ST70, Lux 3045, Belles, Spectrascan, etc. Stock would probably sound a tiny bit better w/o grill cloth so Utility version could be the prize. They make ok tv speakers. My mesa amp's bass isn't tight enough (if its possible to get Khorn tight partly due to low mass rolloff)
Easy. Swap it for a kludged 70's model with no grill cloth a plus piezo.Booom-chish. Thank you. I'll be here all week.
Ya' gotta love one liners on a Sunday morning.Make sure the tweeter isn't blown, and that somebody didn't replace the woofer with the 99 cent special from an old Allied radio catalog.
And fredyi - I'm looking for some good Karlson links on the web - care to share?
BTW - they all (klipsch heritage types) sound that way to me until I start driving them with 6B4s. But that's just my thing.
= its a Klipschorn ! "the horn which thinks its a BP"hey TC - woofer door appeared never to have been opened til now = square magnet "K33e" (maybe 2.5" vc???)
looked at your 6B4 amp - really pretty - fab chassis and build - is that Hammond 124 a better sounding driver than an Electraprint choke (or no iron at all and cathode-coupled inverter)?--already got EP chokes but dunno if worth using - - ???? - seems like the choke splitter would add flavor to one side.
any cheap sources of 6B4G or suitable sounding substitute? - are there any multigrid tied as triode that aound as good?
I've still got a horrible looking patallel 2A3 SET clunker that played pretty good on Edgarhorn.
re:Karlson - Job Ulfman's Karlson Speaker Project files are still online but his forum died a few years back and he has no plans to revive the forum.
Thanks, Frediy,"is that Hammond 124 a better sounding driver than an Electraprint choke (or no iron at all and cathode-coupled inverter)?--already got EP chokes but dunno if worth using - - ???? - seems like the choke splitter would add flavor to one side."
No idea - but if I had 'em I'd certainly try 'em! Don't drive 'em with anything wimpy... use a power tube or a 7044. My PP amp is on the bench right now (after 2.5 years reliable service). It was wonderful, but it got knocked out of the stack by my rebuilt parafeed 6B4.
My 6B4 parafeed amp is configured to use many different octal power tubes, EL34, 6L6, 6B4, 6A5 ect. The single plate 6B4s still sound the best to me in most situations, but ya' know I put in some "Realistic Lifetime" 6CA7 fat-bottles and my CD of "Green Onions" just came to life! It was very flat and recessed. Triodes are cool but topology rules.
Angela Instruments has some "6B4" - internally triode strapped 6AV5 based like a 6B4 - at very reasonable prices - I'm getting some to try. The Sovteks are getting expensive and hard to find.
Thanks for Karlson search clue! I have some 15" Altec 423s that need a home.
