Hi
Here is a picture of my just completed RCA Fan's V vent cabinets.
They are loaded with Altec 515B woofers.
The HF will be Altec 288-16G + wooden conical horns. I plan to use 700 Hz horns simmilar to RCA Fans design.
Will there be a substantial gain in sound quality if I go to a bigger horn and lower (500hz)crossover point.
Room size is 20LX12W.
Regards
Rajiv

Hi Rajiv,Congratulations! I think you want to be crossing over lower with a larger horn. What happened to the RCA field coil drivers? 288's are nice but even the RCA permanent magnet drivers sound better.
Yours,
Jonathan
Hi Jonathan
Thank you for your mail.
The RCA field coil driver needs a new diaphagram.I need to order one from Steve.I am searching high and low for another to make a pair,so far no luck.
My Japanese made RCA Victor drivers(MI 9445 clones) are in storage,I will get them and try them out.

Rajiv
http://www.acoustic-horn.com/measure.htmlHere is a curve of a 288 on a 700Hz horn.
You have to make a much bigger horn to go lower. You can x-over easily at 700hz with a conical horn this size.
Use at least a 12dB slope with a notch filter set around 1-3kHz. I am sorry, but I can't help you any further with the crossover details. They are a long drawn out affair.
Greets!Nice! :^) When I was horn 'rolling', I found I much preferred large horns to the progressively 'softer' sound of running the woofer beyond its point source BW, or ~200 Hz for a 2nd order XO, but every time I made a pair someone just had to have them, so have spent most of my 515B listening time with 511/500 Hz and not really minding it, but it's as high as I want to go. Others prefer them up at 800-1200 Hz, so obviously a very personal call.
(hi GM) makes a good off-shelf midhorn in pseudo-Klipsch applications with cheap paging driver and tweeter shoved back to mid-driver plane (seems to help focus with percusssion). (wonder if 811 would sound right on top of Sentry IV?) 511 is good for the Bon Scott crowd. Freddy
Greets!Does a S4 go that high? I thought they needed a 350-400 Hz XO? Yeah, 511s pound pretty good for a 1" throat.
sure don't although 811 might rattle down to ~500(?) Best!
Greets!Destructively I imagine.
Hi
Freddyi thank you for your comments. The cabinets were built using marine ply,and finished with teak veneer.
I have just run the 515's fullrange so far.The sound is tight with nice chest kicking hit.
I will try to fit the horns over the weekend.
I would like suggestions on the crossovers.Would standard Altec types work?

Rajiv

Hi Rajiv - your full link doesn't work for me but the thumbnail picture is beautiful. I can't answer your conical horn question but seems like larger with 288 might be helpful (???)how does your 515 V-vent sound with whatever you've tried yet? what kind of wood and finish did you use?
Best,
Freddy
