It's probably OK, Altec made several cabinets with the horn set back a little and open areas at each end of the horn that acted as the bass-reflex vents.Did you look at the plans at this link?

Thank you. I didn't see the one matching mine.
My cabinet is a pretty simple 24x24x35 box, using a 15" 803a,
802/6d HF, 811b horn, n800E crossoverOn another note, I found the highs are a little rolloff even
when I tuned the cross-over all the way. any ideas?
GC---Altec highs are somewhat rolled off, no doubt of that. Though actually no more rolled off than those from the EV tweeter that Klipsch used.Altecs will make nice extended highs if you use a crossover that has an EQ circuit that pushes down the extra and usually unneeded midrange energy in order to flatten out the overall response. Altec used several such crossovers in the 1970s in the "teens" series--models Fourteen through Nineteen. My Model Nineteens have more extended highs than other Altecs I've owned.
There are plans out there on the net for such crossovers, do a search at the unofficial Altec forum.
an 802d rolled off? hm. i thought that was the driver that went to 22k?mebbe the diaphragms are worn out, or maybe you're more accustomed to a more bright 'modern' sound? sounds like a fantastic system-- give it a while of listening to see if it's just a taste issue!
good luck and congrats!

Greets! This is a 511/802D measured with a TEF machine. As you can see, it needs 'CD-EQ' as TB notes to sound its best in a HIFI app.
I love the sound, no question about it.
I wonder your observation myself. I was comparing this to
a Klipsch LaScala.
do they actually NOT put CD comp. networks in there? i built my own XO and never used one of the altec ones-- i thought they would have with and 802d because it COULD actually go that high!aha.. that would explain people talking about the rolled off highs that i've never experienced! fair nuf...
Greets! No, since a tube amp combined with a passive XO did it in the way they interacted with the driver's VC, plus they typically had adjustable DF to further shape its response if desired. When vanishingly low output impedance SS amps became the norm they were slow to offset it in the XO or with a separate add-on filter, so by the time they did with the M-19, 9846 and others, it was too little too late to regain any of the lost market share.
