The Altec model 414 12" woofer has superb sound; good bass and gorgeous upper bass and midrange.Altec 416 and 515 15" woofers are also excellent, no better 15s out there in terms of clarity and presence. Some 15s will go deeper but none sound better overall.
I think Great Plains Audio makes modern versions of all these drivers.

eek...I'm looking for something a *little* less expensive :) Something like $75-$100 per woofer is in my budget. Some of those Altecs are going for way more than I can afford right now.
Hi Jim,I would just add that while you will not get performance that is as good as what you heard using parts of lesser quality, you can get pretty close provided that your spl requirements are reasonable. In addition to the Dayton mentioned by GM, consider the Eminence Delta 12 and the Selenium 12PW5-SLF. Both are in your price range. I assume that you are asking about a 12-inch because of cabinet size, cost or both. If not, consider the Eminence Delta 15. If you go into this having realistic expectations, I think you will be really pleased with the outcome.
Good luck,
Greets!Good luck with that, this is the cheapest semi-decent HE driver I'm aware of, though even then you'll need to use a 511 and older 802 0r 806 driver with it so you can use a 500 Hz XO. That, or a very steep XO slope and ideally with a notch filter to mate to an 800 Hz XO.
