This question has probably been posted a zillion times. If so, I apologize...I have a stereo tube amp that I made that I'm trying to match speakers to. Single-ended circuit using EL84s (6BQ5s), so maybe 7 watts/channel. Need some relatively hi-efficiency speakers to use with this. Looking for a kit that includes the cabinet, and not wanting to spend more than $500 for the pair. I'm OK with putting together a cabinet, finishing the wood, etc. but not with cutting out the pieces, planing the boards, and all that. Want the best matched drivers I can get at that price.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,

Thanks for the ideas folks. There are some good things to think about here. I had originally been looking for bookshelf type speakers, but now am leaning in other directions.Any other suggestions are welcome!
How about a flat pack for a Frugel Horn, http://www.frugal-horn.com/
A very nice little speaker!
If so... well worth considering IMNSHO.Not to be repetitiously redundant :-) but I am quite fond of my DIY folded ML TQWT's, which were designed by Bob.
all the best,

I have zero experience with these ,but what about the Hawthorne Silver Iris coaxials? The drivers ( 15" )run about $300 for the pair and are designed for an open baffle config. So your cabinets would amount to one or two of sheets of plywood or mdf. Should be able to bring that in under $400 if you don't go with deluxe ply. Efficiency is stated to be 96 db and this is where someone with more knowledge of this speaker than I possess could chime in. I have no idea if this is accurate or hignly optimistic.....not to mention how deep they go in bass response. Either way, sounds like an interesting project that I might tackle in the future.Simply haven't heard that much feedback though.
bass is pretty good overall as is power handling - SI seems more sensitive than Klipsch Heresy - this baffle is tilted and has some effect upon the graph
Thanks for that info, Freddyi.I'm adding these to my project list. I'm wondering if perhaps one should push the envelope a bit and go with a second pair of 15" drivers as pictured at the Hawthorne website. The " bass " drivers require a separate plate amp, but these can be had at a fairly reasonable price.
You might want to contact Layertone on the fullrangedriver.com forum. He builds one off back loaded horns with a cnc machine. Cheers.
I agree with the BK16s. The other option is to find a pair of Klipsch Hereseys on eBay. They are well within your price range and sound great with tubes. Cheers.
with ff165K drivers (from Madisound). They look really promising,
and are quite substantial in construction. You absolutely need
a good number (10-12) of bar clamps in various lengths, and would
greatly benefit from having a good hand random-orbit sander too.
A router is not absolutely necessary, but is nice to use for flush-
cutting the sides and rounding-off the box edges once they are
all glued together. Lots of pieces to carefully fit, and so it
has taken a bit longer than expected.I have not heard them yet, and so any recommendation would be
very tentative at best. I will post full review in this forum
when I have a few hours listening on them. I will be using them
in conjunction with my Fostex T90 supertweeters.I will keep all posted.
Good luck,
I 2nd the BK16 kit from Madisound. Instead of the $$$$$$ T90 I went with FT17H tweeters and Lpads....awesome !!!!! I sold my Quads for these and they cost twice the price.Once assembled and run in for a LONG time (> 200 hours) it is really an exceptional speaker imho. Clamps are also essential and take your time...stuffing is criticial....dont fill up the entire throat with it....mess around with it until you happy with the sound :)
Madisound has gr8 people working for them (no I am not associated with them just happy customer). The only caveat is high shipping costs.
......
It's a little over your budget but it's a good speaker - bk-16 at madisound.
