Hi
I have read a lot about single drivers and I would like some advice as to what diy mid-size budget project could give me a good taste of this approach. I have seen a lot of fostex drivers based good projects but almost all that drivers are not current available on the market. Some others project I have read
- Hammer Dynamics Super 12,
- Lowther usa Ambience 2.8 bass reflex enclosure which uses a second driver on the top of the cabinet.
- HempconeTransmission line, Back horn loaded, bass reflex, open baffle is very hard to decide which one without listening.
So, a little help would be great.
I like natural and real midrange, I listen to a very variety selection of music from 60s psychodelic to progressive rock to jazz and some classical, mostly I like voices.
Then, I would like to choose a SD project that can show me the SD virtues mostly on the midrange/voices.
Thanks
Alan Brain

Hi,
Thanks for the advices. I have checking Jordan drivers but they are not really high efficiency. Other thing I dont know is how is the midrange of these drivers.
The Open baffle design is very good option(as I have read everywhere) for midrange clarity, thats interesting for me.
Im deciding on what project to build but it seems that will be a Lowther with 2 Eminence woofers on a big open baffle design, someone in Full Range Forum suggested that and it seems very good.http://www.quarter-wave.com/Project07/Project07.html
This design will knock your socks off.You will not believe the bass.
They can be placed flat up against a wall also.
No need to eat up your room.GTF
While not High Efficiency, the Jordan JX 92 drivers are very good.I really liked them in the TQWP enclosures I built several years back, before I became a full-blown hornie.
Agreed; I built the GM-MLTL back in the old fullrangedriver.com forum, but I used the Dr Jim Griffin 2-way, with the AC ribbon, and good one inch marine-grade ply. Definitely not high efficiency, but man what a machine. (Thanks again, and always, Greg.)These speakers have resided in our bedroom where they are enjoyed regularly, imparting a fantastic musical aura, especially at night, just relaxing, and DVD soundtracks with Serious Music, like the stuff done by Tangerine Dream alumni, etc... Listening to Weather Report on these things is transcendental music experience, very serious shit indeed. I use a JVC F-10 digital receiver, which is an equally fabulous and synergistic blend. JVC's "hybrid digital" topology is the best sounding switching amp I have heard, heard and owned plenty.
I will say this: if, after all these years of speaker building, and tweaking audio madness I had to settle on ONE speaker, it would be the GM-MLTL, published on the Jordan site, and a good 10 watt tube amp, something like a PP 6V6 would be absolutely destination audio.
Folded TQWT with a Fostex fullrange... mmmmmmmmmmm-mmmmmmmmmm!The photo is one of my Bob Brines designed folded TQWT's with the Radio Shack 40-1354 (no longer available new, sadly), just to give you an idea of what we're talking about. OK, yes, they have some planar 'supertweeters' on 'em, too, but they sound quite good with or without. The Fostex drivers, which are very nice sounding if a bit more expensive, oughta sound even better.
Plenty of good ideas at James' site, already mentioned by djn, too.
all the best,
mrh
Fostex FE207E FR in a bass reflex box. "DaveJ" built these, later giving them up for adoption, and I adopted 'em. They are a really nice sounding family of drivers and the shielded FE207E will work in such a simple box. The port's in the rear. (Yes, you can see the TQWT and its tweeter box hiding behind the FE207E and a Quad ESL-57 that got caught in the crossfire)You could probably even use one of the prebuilt, veneered speaker enclosures from Partsexpress and have a very simple, very enjoyable, very efficient fullrange speaker.
all the best,
mrh

Hi Alan, you might also want to post your questioin on the full-range driver forum. The have a gallary of pictures of many many projects, plans, and people that only tinker with single drivers. Cheers and good luck.
The Fullrange forum is very good and deserves a more than casual read, however DIYAudio.com has a fullrange forum listed under "speakers" that has been extremely active. There must be a dozen or more designs published recently and several variations of many of them for different drivers. Many are backloaded horns, double horns and so forth. A real feast of single driver designs.
