Hello, I just bought a Vestax Handy Trax portable turntable. It's quite alright, except for the built in speaker. The speaker is labled "VEC 8 Ohm 4 Watts". I'm assuming its some form of full range speaker, but it's not very good. Can anyone recommend a 3" speaker that might be better sounding and fall within those specs (8ohm 4W - does that mean a minimum of 4W or max?) Obviously the higher the efficency the better, I'd think, as this turntable is only a low power unit with a power consumption of 7 watts. This is a fun little toy of a player but just a touch more fidelity would be nice! Thank your for you help.

that can be plugged into the headphone jack. Speakers intended for computer use would probably work, you wouldn't have to tear things up, and you would turn off the vibrating speaker sharing the cabinet with the phonograph.
These projects are fun, but can be a little disappointing. Very often the components in equipment in this price range are very well matched. That is, the performance of the phono cartridge is matched to the amplifier, and the speaker quality is chosen to match these. In the event that there is some leeway for improvement in sound quality you could consider the 4-inch full range Onkyo drivers on sale at Madisound (http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=6581.15647&pid=915), and at Parts Express (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=269-734). Make sure that there is room, especially in the depth dimension.Good luck,
OOPS!You wanted a 3-inch, not a 4-inch. Try the 3-inch Aurasound at Madisound (http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=6581.15647&pid=1757), or consider one of the 4-inch drivers in my first post (if they will fit). These are most likely overkill, but are the closest thing they sell to what you are looking for. Your best bet may well be to check out Goodwill or garage sales for used computer speakers. Look for Altecs or Logitecs.
Again, good luck,
