Hello!!
Well, I put a pair of OLSON 6 1/2" FR drivers (with whizzer cones), in a rear slot-loaded, 1cf, home-built cab. The Olson's had a large & heavy ceramic magnet, so I figured I'd try a rear slot-loaded design in a smaller cabinet. The cabinets were constructed with 1" pine, heavily braced, walls insulated, and with light fill also. With that heavy magnet structure, the 1" x 8" rear slot really moves a lot of air!!
I placed them on 25" home-built speaker stands.
They are driven by a 1978 Harman Kardon 450 DC receiver and a 1988 Magnavox CDB460 CD player.
Sound wise?
VERY good mid-range, slightly forward but extremely life-like.
The high are all there, reasonably detailed but not bright, no need for a tweeter.
Considering the driver and cabinet dimensions, the bass is pretty decent. Not deep and powerful mind you, but not loose and boomy either.
You will not need a sub-woofer with these.
Very versatile speaker; excellent with vocals & guitar, but has enough bass & dynamic range to play rock and jazz with authority also.
Wasn't sure how it would come out?
Is the frequency ruler flat.....hell no!!
And I have other speakers that easily outperform it, at the frequency extremes.
That said.....it has a "musicality" to it, that keeps you sitting in front of it for hours!
Follow Ups:
Sorry, I forgot.
The 1" x 8" slotted ports are filled with light foam to slowly let out some air.
There is a name for the this....starts with an A...but I cannot remember, sorry people!
know what you're saying - bet less fatiguing than a lot of multi-way with CDs - if you're using those
Yeah Freddy, less fatiguing with everything!
Maybe this best-sounding DIY that I've ever made....so far.
