"The vintage JBLs are the best, so do insist on them."Have you heard the 2435? Be 3" diaphragm and neo magnet. Might just be the nicest sounding compression driver I've ever heard. Very clean mids and extended and natural highs. I heard it on a radial horn, a Community I think.
My opinion of course, I can't say what's best.
Follow Ups:
Agree a great sounding current production pro driver.Heard one used by Jeffery Jackson in a LeCleach horn at RMAF in Denver last year. Couldn't believe a current production “pro” compression driver with a Be diaphragm could be so well-behaved.
But, they ain't cheap!

Ivan---Used ones are often on ebay at 200-250 bucks a pop, cheap. I often think about buying a pair but I don't need them, I'm up to my ears in speakers now.
There's a thread about buying used on ebay between myself and djk, maybe a few months back.
