Hey Kurt.. you are in a tough spot... but you can get rid of that Lowther shout with a different phase plug... it takes away some of the very top end, but it really fixes the mids... everyone that has heard the difference has liked the larger PM4 wooden phase plug better... but they added super tweeters...please note that all of this is with Azuras and Lowthers.. Oris and BD weren't exactly my cup of tea.. very good, just not long term livable.. again, just my personal opinion... but the phase plug change was demo'd at VSAC in front of a crowd.. it was 100% consensus...
but with the dynamics and clarity.. there is only one option.. and it is tough.. compression drivers.. they are *the* answer for what you want... but getting it just roght is extremely difficult... I have ben working on various compression driver projects for years... still no "turn key" product... but I have a few things that I am extremely happy with.. anyway.. Edgar Titans are in your price range.. and you should definitely go listen to them.. if you like them, you are done!
don't let anyone talk you into anything below 105dB/watt...
good luck!
Peace,
Me

I guess it needed super tweeters, but where? Outside the huge flare of that horn? That'll sure be way off axis with the midrange. Still, there was too much shout and weirdness going on. Not enough good, too much bad still. I'm just getting a bit tired of the Lowther/AER limitations.

Well, there are the BD-Design Orpheans that are using compression drivers. They are cheaper than Edgarhorns in DIY form and even 5 db more sensitive.

Well I sure don't want to go below that if possible. It's because my best sounding amp (at least from low midrange on up) is a real low-watter.

I'll need it. I probably won't get much of a chance at auditioning any such speakers. I might have to just roll the dice again and go for one.
If only I knew how to design my own super efficiency horns. Making those round horns is kind of hard on a table saw. :-)

Ain't that the truth!eso
To have 105db over the whole range is often not practical, to do so means tolerating restricted bass or using very large direct radiating arrays or basshorns. Small basshorns sound lousy IMO.Me, I'm doing fine with 98-99db with good bass and a reasonably sized enclosure.
