Once in a very great while I hear a loud clacking{?}coming from my 806 altec compression driver. Any idea on the cause, its intermittent and does'nt last long? The preamp is an old Sansui ca 2000 and I was thinking a bad capacitor or something.
Follow Ups:
I'd suggest you narrow them down by swapping the speakers and see if the problem follows. Likewise with whatever source you're using into the amp. Sherlock Holmes was correct, "eliminate possibilities until whatever is left, no matter how improbable, is the problem" - or something to that effect.Cheers,
Well if you overdrive them the diaphragm can clack against the phasing plug. And sometimes the aluminum suspension fatiques and cracks and that can make a random noise.
Thanks guys. I'll look over the diaphram. I don't listen at loud levels but I do cross them over at 500hz. with a 6 db. active crossover. I can't remember if the 806's were to be crossed at only 800 hz. or not. Been lov'in them for 3 years crossed at 500 hz. with a 511 horn.
Pretty low for that driver.
I used 806s on 511s at 500, 1st order. They never clacked but I wouldn't be surprised if they did, in fact I was kind'a surprised they didn't. JBL 2420s I used the same way clacked like chickens.
