I am about to acquire a pair of speakers featuring the we 755a driver in a single driver set up.
Anyone ever heard a pair in good condition and care to describe the sound?
I have searched the archives and googled it,but mainly find discussions of rarity, condition and prices, etc.
Would love to read descriptions of midrange quality compared to Quads,Tannoys,...whatever.
Follow Ups:
It has been years, but I once listened to a pair of W.E. 755As in small, open backed Jensen cabinets in an audiophile's home. He placed them out in the room several feet from the rear and side walls. He also had vintage Lowthers in TP-1 enclosures in the corners, alternately running each pair from homebrew 300B amps. As he switched back and forth repeatedly I realized that both systems had similar bandwidth and overall sound and at one point I became confused as to which speakers were playing- it was the 755As. Pretty impressive.I have some archival materials from a retired (now deceased) RCA speaker engineer. One of the files contains "Competitive Loudspeaker Data Test Sheets." There is a file from 1947 on the W.E. 755A, and it shows an impressively wide and smooth response curve.
IMO the W.E. 755A represents the finest efforts of the incomparable Bell Labs / Western Electric personnel to design and build an excellent yet affordable small wide band driver. I believe that they succeeded admirably, and that the reputation and pricing of the remaining examples is well justified.
"I have some archival materials from a retired (now deceased) RCA speaker engineer."Can you post this somewhere, Steve. I'd love to see it.

Joseph Esmilla had 'em on OB's, IIRC. They're s'posed to be the bee's knees on OB's.
I just spoke with Joseph yesterday via email. He has added a letter I sent a while back to his 755 pages.
Here's a link to some comments Herb Reichert made on the WE 755A. I had an opportunity to hear a pair of speakers that use this driver and was very impressed. Granted this was a few hour session but I'd like to spend more time with them.Cheers.
Excellent link.Makes me even more certain I am doing the right thing.
Thanks,Michael!
....like a quam 8" ceiling speaker in your department store. (except a few dB more efficient)I simply don't get why they go for so much money on the market.
They are the most over-valued piece in audio today..and yes, I had several of them in various enclosures.
When they tore down the G.C. Murphys dept. storein the early 80's in this town, we saved the speaker cable and amplifiers but tossed almost all of the 60+ speakers that were rat infested. Imagine what fortune they would bring today. Nothing special then, nothing special now IMO.
i think they're overvalued BUT.. it definitely depends on your listening habits.. for quiet listening, 755a's are truly awesome speakers to flush out texture! but loud.. they just don't do loud.y' need a 728b for loud... ;)
