Hi folks.
I am thinking of a journey into the "horn world".
The Oris seems very tempting.
Has anyone experience with these products from bd-design.nl?
The Orphean is the most tempting product for my taste I think. Are there people who have compared these to for instance Avantgarde or similar products?
Best Regards
Greetings from cold Norway

If you are interested in the Orphean (BMS coaxial compression driver) I would go visit RCA-Fan at acoustic-horn.com and look at his DIY 300hz conical horn. Not too expensive, add a BMS driver and a woofer.
I'm not even sure how these relate.
Which one will be the most appealing for the listener can't really be told just by choice of driver. Assuming our man has heard the orphean and totally digs em we can't assume that a similar acoustic LF cut-off and the same driver will provide that same musical use.
Personally i think the whole conical thing is poppycock, but that seems to be just me.
Fug the Oris and the way overpriced AN stuff. Find a used pair of Avantgarde Duo, or Uno horns. Your search will be over. Sounds grandiose, but its oh so true.http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1173372170
I don't understand...
not to open another can o' worms, cause it's been said before-- but everything CAN'T be cheap-- least of all good craftsmanship and decent materials, not to mention serious research.i'm as bargain conscious as the next dude-- and there's lots of overpriced snake oil out there-- but i'm also a craftsman, and be careful where ya lie the 'way overpriced' label, 'cause i wouldn't NECESSARILY throw it on audio note. parts ain't cheap-- least of all good ones! i've got a few pieces of audio note stuff (primarily cables), and not because of the price tag is it some of the stuff with the most longevity in my own system.
i can't say you're wrong that audio note is pricy stuff-- but it isn't BAD, nor necessarily universally a bad value. can't speak as for avant garde stuff-- but it seems it's got its own audience as well!
no flame meant-- just throwin' out to be conscious!

Avantgarde - a cheap solution for DIY people
If you want to get into horns I'd start with something similar to Edgarhorn , where you have a perspective to eventually get to SOTA sound with Oris type you're pretty much limited to buying those overpriced lowther-like drivers in attempt to improve sonics . Yes Bert knows what he's doing .He's selling the speakers. I heard the system in RMAF and earlier in LIma (it sucked !) and as it was not enough I've built similar because at that time ORIS was all over the AA and I though that there is something wrong with me. If you into horn build real ones or buy some vintage tannoys or at least try to get some audition of Oris system before purchase. If you'll like it then great ,system is compact and looks neat .Regards. L
I see now why you didnt have good results. Might be best to stick with AN since you do enjoy this.Plus your listening at long past shows doesnt show how much oris system have changed.
John ,yes you're right it's not the same . I think that it should actually be better in most regards as bass horn should be better than BR with SS plate amp crossed ~200Hz and Azura horns are said to be more open sounding than ORIS. I remember that you ended up using array of ORIS horns to get them integrated with tweeter. The problem I have with my setup is poor mid-bass (mushy and ill defined) and that was the same feeling listening to the Oris , tweeter implementation ,(I have no skill probably ) time alignment -tricky with Oris and impossible with Klipshorn .I know that every speaker is a set of compromises but this one is a dead end for me .Sorry, did not want to step on your foot . I do like AN and I like it only because their system on every audition sounded much more coherent & musical than any horn based system I heard . Which to me is a proof that to build a system around horns is much more involving a requires much more care than with conventional speaker. True that better AN cost arm & leg but they know how to hook up everything together for musical enjoyment and most horn makers just connect whatever is available . If this forum is only about "I rub your back , so you will rub my " what's the purpose?
Peter , I'm sorry I admit that I'm of the subject if Orphean system is compression driver based. I have nothing against Bert . I met him and he is a nice modest guy quite critical and honest about his work . I will watch my tongue in the future. Regards to all.
Hi limono, heard the AN. It is a very classical design with
Xo at 2khz (?). For about twenty years i have been having a pair
of fantastic (but not so efficient) speakers
with a crossover at 2kHz. They sound great for many things,
but one can be ultimately critical for the 2kHz.
For instance i would really like to hear a violin
(say Milstein on bach's partitas...) on the AN,
and sees whether the magic is there. That is a matter of choice (and certainly of music).
If one uses Lowther kind of drivers, one would struggle
with the XO at 150Hz but would obtain something coherent
at 2KHz...Also not bought much by Bert, but found him very
helpful and he does not BS. He might deserve his
success.
Best,
Vincent.

I was referring to A-Note system as a whole not to the speakers in particular. I heard AN (kit) speakers driven by SS Blue Circle prototype amp and they were OK too. I'm not a fan of AN per se but after I have listened on couple occasions some nicer AN systems I don't understand persistent aversion toward this company on those boards . AN really do provide musical enjoyment. Not at the prices I can afford so what ? Should I blame P.Q that I can't afford his prices ?(I try to resist but I do from time to time actually :) .The thing with AN speakers is you have a uniform SET sound Bass -to treble with Oris like solution you have a half SET with SS amp in quite critical point .(If you are SET fan ) I used a wrong (inappropriate ) expression "Dead End " There is plenty of people who love ORIS and for ready to go system it's probably very nice . But this is not what horns supposed to be about or is it? I'm new to the subject so I may be wrong .REgards
Agreed AN sounds good with many things
whereas full rangers will destroy
you ears with jittery sources or crap pop.
But still listen critically to the AN's 2Khz...
(and also do not hesitate to tell PQ that his stuff
is f.. expensive!)BTW good that you let us know that you were not happy with
front horns. Be more precise may be (?)
The only front horns i heard sounded coloured and the bass integration was poor. Moreover the "sweet spot" was less that
the distance between my two ears. Still i don't know Orys
and wish to listen to a Orys system to see what it is
worth.
berts bass system, oris horns work in many diferant set ups just because you guys didnt like, doesnt mean its a dead end.I find oris with just a fullrange to sound dark and have limited off axis responce but by using a tweeter instead of fullrange with difusser I dont have this problem also is more affordable than AER etc sealed backs to me dont sound as nice as open back which gives a wee dipole effect.
I have to agree with Limono. I listened to a number of horn systems and actually started with an Altec A7 sytem which was inexpensive compared to other systems. After listening to the ORIS, I passed. I ended up with the Edgarhorns.
Hi,Opinions vary, of course, but please note, that the Orphean that Bambadoo actually inquires about is NOT using full-range drivers, but compression drivers - in this case a modified BMS driver.
Hi,I have owned Oris 150's with AER MD3 drivers and they were excellent in many respects. I have not heard the Orphean, but Bert certainly knows what he is doing, and he is also very helpful!
If I were to start all over again, I would go the Orphean system!
You will find plenty of info if you
make a search on this site.By the way, from what i know: Orys horns and AG are
quite different: A Orys horn use one wide-range driver
(AER/Lowther/Fostex) whereas AG uses multiple horns.
AG are ready made and Orys are DIY.I do not have the front horns but love my aer drivers
- in proper enclosures they sound really ok.
