I have in mind the 18sound 10nda610 on an open baffle eq`d with a behringer dig XO and the same brands ND1020 of the BMS H4538 CD on the 18sound XT120 horn, xo at 3-4k. The lower freq driven by 2 x 15" drivers per channel on OB (W frame).
Follow Ups:
We used a JBL 2012 10" in a sealed cab from 200 to 1200Hz or so with a Martinelli 800Hz horn on top loaded with a JBL 2435 compression driver.Underneath a JBL 2226 15" woofer in a BR. Behringer 2496 xover and two digital HT receivers. Not bad. Very robust. Something Tommy could grow to like. I don't think he ever heard it. I have some pictures, but I can never remember how to get them up here. :-(
All of the JBL 4340-4345 series use a 10" mid. The 4344 mk2 and the 4348 also use one. Westerlake used and still does use the JBL 2122 from the 4344/4345.
Not a high efficiency speaker but a large powered monitor, the BBC LS5/8 used a polyprop 12" woofer and 1 1/4" Audax soft dome. I reviewed it in the early 80s for Stereophile and loved it. I would have bought it if I could have afforded it. So it can be done.
I use a 10" woofer & 1" compression driver (on DDS waveguide) crossed passively at 1.7 kHz. Seems to work okay. That 18Sound elliptical waveguide is pretty small; you'll probably start to lose directional control below 2.5 kHz or so. Assuming your mid driver is still clean when crossed over that high, it should work.
Duke
Duke do you still offer that model? Looks like a very fair price. Is that walnut veneer? Any 07 CES pics?
Hi John,Thanks for asking!
Yup, I still offer that one. Bumped the price up to $4.2k because of more expensive capacitors in the compression driver's signal path (switched from Solens to Sonicaps).
The front is solid 3/4" walnut backed by 3/4" Baltic birch, and the other panels are 3/4" veneered MDF. Most of the other panels use constrained layer damping to reduce panel vibration.
My room at T.H.E. Show was actually a two-room mini-suite, so I had two systems going at once (playing the same music 98% of the time). I swapped speakers back and forth between the rooms, so which speakers are in which room depends on which day the photographer came by. So far a few pics of my room have appeared:
http://positive-feedback.com/Issue29/ces071.htm (scroll down about 4/5 of the way; nice blurb.)
http://positive-feedback.com/Issue29/ces072.htm (scroll down about 3/4 of the way - this is a floorstanding version of the previously stand-mounted Stormbringer. Larger woofer than the Jazz Modules, but a bit less expensive.)
I probably shouldn't count my chickens before they hatch, but I might get a mention in StereoTimes.com's coverage of T.H.E. Show when it comes out.
In the link below, the last photo is a close-up of one of four small subwoofers I had scattered around the room, driven by a single plate amp. I will probably demo a satellite-subwoofer system using the four-box subwoofer setup at a future show.
Duke
Nice work Duke think you will do well but as you know doing well doesnt mean much in audio sales;) Love the walnut finish, noticed DDS wave guides in a few CES systems. The multi sub idea is interesting bet folks might like large bass without taking up so much room, (like my giant bass horns do still the mighty pressure they produce is something you need to hear feel to understand).Your the 1st I know who have thought of multiple subs off one amp for commercial sale. You might be on to something with so much HT sales going on you can cover both audio and HT with one product. Bet folks could start with 2 subs and add more as needed....$$$. Heres an idea for you how about a in wall DDS with a 10in? Might be more affordable to build bet you could charge the same as floorstanders would think the wave guide or horn would do very well as a in wall.
hey Duke - looks like 'someone could lighten those pix with $10 software?
Stephen,
I've just started using the 10NDA520 OB with a BMS 4552ND on a DDS 90 waveguide. Woofers are BMS 18N850 in damped U-baffles. Quite impressive so far but still need more measurements, especially off-axis, to validate/refine the XO. For now, XO frequencies are 200 and 1.1k, 48db.My thoughts are that 3-4k would be asking too much of the 10NDA610...it may be better rolled off around 2k. Q is quite low so, depending on low XO frequency, it may require boost to get down to the 15"...no problem for the 2496.
With a 2k XO to the 610, the XT120 may be too small for good pattern control on the low end. If you want to stick with Eighteensound, they have a larger WG with almost the same pattern.
Overall, it can be an extremely impressive system. Jaw dropping dynamics and very refined details in the same package.

I`m glad to hear that you are working on something similar.I`ll be using the 10nda610 which has better upper response than the 520. It is a valid point anyway, but I think the dispersion characteristics should be ok crossing at around 3k.
I fear running into compression issues on the mid when boosting its lower end with the berhringer (about 8dB @ 200Hz), that is why I went with a larger cone wide range mid, which seems to have very good compression characteristics (look at the spec sheet http://www.eighteensound.it/index.aspx?mainMenu=view_product&pid=241 ).
I`ll look at the bigger horn. BTW, where are you crossing the 18" to the mids=?
The 520/610 choice was a bit of agony for me. Breakup for the 610 begins higher but 520 directivity changes more gradually and rolloff toward the bottom end is not as steep (suggesting less EQ boost). No doubt they are both excellent drivers with just a slight offset in the intended ranges. One of my goals is matching directivity at XO which is why I need more off-axis measurements...unfortunately winter arrived this week :(
will do 2k but I think you will like the XT1086 better. At least I do. I use the ND1090 compression driver and cross around 1K8. If it was me I'd rather have the mid go down lower, like 100 hertz, than have it run up to 3K. The XT1086 at home could go down quite low with a steep order slope but I like it near the 2K point.I am glad to see some discussion on the 18sound drivers. I have a distributor locally who will sell at wholesale to me and it makes the line attractive so I'd like to hear what others are doing. The drivers look like they are made with horn loading in mind. I have seen the line on display and some of the big woofers are impressive looking monsters:) But I want to try open baffle bass and they don't look well suited to that:(
Hey Russ - do 4 XT1086 bolt pattern XT1086 fit 2-bolt like Eminence 1"? - guess they don't throw in a pattern to cut the oval (?)
I would also think that 2K would be a better directivity match between the drivers.
