In Reply to: any Karlson K15 up and running with coaxial? posted by freddyi on January 17, 2007 at 19:35:31:
Hey Freddyi, I have three daughters and one is moving out of the dorms and into a house next year and wants me to build her a system. I have always wanted to build Karlsons but don't know what the best driver would be. Remember, this will be going into a house with five girls and all their friends so the drive needs to be tough. What would you suggest? Cheers.
Follow Ups:
Djn, Karlsons will provide all the throbbin' bass needed for those weekend dance parties. Don't know about the modern drivers available, some sort of 15" prosound coax should do nicely. Expanded matal grilles on the front would be a good idea.
p-audio's 15CXHA looks ok - you think the girls would like karlson-sound? - if you build then don't make front shelf any longer nor port narrower than 1954 plans for starters - then can be adjusted
I think with kids, it is the thump that matters most and I have always heard that the Karlsons can put out some big thump. Is that so? Cheers.
bass has pretty good quality and can thump and kick - for horn on top, K15 likes Altec 421 a lotany lower mass 15 with pretty strong magnet should work in a pinch - plus it'll look cool - do you have any drivers laying around for the project?
Not right now. I am still trying to figure out if this is the right cab for her. Cheers.
mine could play a pretty wide range of material from lieder to classical piano to cello/bowed bass and can have nice vocals. with good speker they do fun techno and rap. I like mine better than my open baffles. K15 is a bulky box for some folks. maybe you need one? :^)
My other option is to build a line array (which I have all the drivers for) but don't know if they are a "rockin" type speaker of more of a smoothy. Cheers.
Karlsons win the "rockin" category by a lightyear.... not that they don't have some problems. Line arrays have weird imaging that gives me a headache. Probably good 50-100ft away like in a theater.
--one you've got drivers for might be the best choice!
First off, let me say that I am a Karlson zealot, hence the username.I have found that, especially for dorms and frat/sorority houses, Karlsons destroy everyone else's stereo options. Granted with todays technology and advancements some of the sets out there really hit hard. But if you have a good reciever, and a good set of Karlsons, kiss the little guys goodbye.
I'm currently running a Sony STR-DG500 ( Link )
with two Karlson K12 enclosures running JL Audio 12W1v2-4 drivers ( Link )
and they are phoenominal!
With the STR-DG500 you can actually hook up to your DVD player, and your TV out and get rediculous sound out of them, granted not surround, but with Karlson's pumping out Twister, your still going to feel that tornado whipping by. I have 2 setups a 7.1 surround with all Karlsons, that's my theater, and my ST-DG500 for my stereo applications.
Trust me, you HAVE to balance these Karlsons carefully, if you don't they'll phase each other out, or do some wierd distortion across the band, be careful, and don't overpower them.
