Hi-I gave a pair of JBL LE8-T's (alnico) to my brother for Christmas, along with the promise that we could spend some time together building cabinets to put them in. I had it all figured out until I saw your post to freddy about the IMF cabinet. My brother mostly listens to hard rock and early ska music, so what cabinet (and material) would you reccomend that would suit deep purple to desmond decker? I was originaly thinking of a 3cuft ported of your Karlson line thingie, "RCA like" bass sounds interesting.
It seems like alot of your testing is based around (LE8-type) so I thought you would have a good idea. I'm not opposed to adding a tweeter etc. and will probably give a 6v6 pp (15~20 watts) amp to my brother along with the speakers.
Follow Ups:
Picked up some 50's black-cone alnico LE8s on eBay not too long ago...guess nobody wanted them. They sound fine all alone in a 2 cu ft BR box I had from an earlier project, nice extension to 40hz. I wouldn't drive them too hard, but maybe just the thing for a do-it-all system for a small room.
IMF box= smooth Hi Fi deep bass sound.
Marsh box good copmprimise
"Ver 6" punchy rock bass- but hole in 150Hz area.
Another good choice is a 3 cft box, but made as an Onken Box with the big vents on each side.
I too, would like to be your brother! .alnico no less!
BillPS the Fountec is a good tweeter with LE 8
Thanks you, that version 6 is nice looking, I'll have to look into those tweeters.
What kind of sound could one expect with an onken style cab? I've modeled some in the past including a cardboard prototype for 15" speaker that was octogonal with two triangular ports at base (for square bottom) and an 8 sided 150hz front horn with ~75sq" throat.
Is your karlson type similar to IMF only with coupler instead of square openings? I know the various stuffing materials where supposed to be a big part of the smoothness of IMF, is wave still "in-phase" with out stuffing?
What kind of sound could one expect with an Onken style cab?> The Onken style venting is the best type of vent I have found, in terms of wind noise, phase, and lack energy transfer of mid frequencies.

> No, it is a conical backload hornI know the various stuffing materials where supposed to be a big part of the smoothness of IMF, is wave still "in-phase" with out stuffing?
> I hate stuffing. Aside from power loss, there is no help with phase conflict between horn mouth and driver. The more stuffing you put in , the less horn you have.
Get a trumpet and stuff it full of fiberglass. I am sure Sachmo will jump at it.
Bill
Bill, remember when we ran a single LE8 in one of the late iterations of the k-slot cabinet? Wow-assorted-expletives that thing would pound my chest all the way to the back of the house! With a well integrated tweeter for stunning highs, the search would be over. Just imagine having a stereo pair! You really should re-cone yours so that I can borrow them.
There is an image of the Fostex-loaded final design in your gallery (I preferred the unpainted plywood version with all of the crossover schematics penciled in on the top).http://gallery.audioasylum.com/cgi/wi.mpl?u=21168&f=OakSpeaker_004.jpg_
Benford's law of controversy - Passion is inversely proportional to the amount of real information available.
Dave, I will get right on that re-cone, I don't know what I was thinking keeping you waiting.
Of course the LE8 is at Oswald's Mill
hey Bill - were/are there any hh for 12" like Eminence stuff with fs ~45 and Q around 0.3? - looking for something for 12" and ENG-90
Are 12" HH feasible for that type spec?a new karlson 12 be fun (for a difernt project)
my C190 say in tiny print "made in china" ...
JBL says to put them into 3 cubic foot boxes tuned to 35Hz. I would start there. If you are lucky, maybe GM will catch this thread and model a TQWT for you.
I was going to put them into a 3 cuft box with 10 degree slant similar to altec 618, only ported at 35. Was wondering if some of the other port configurations would give better sound. I've experimenter with angled vents in the past and thought it may be a better way to go.
was in Augspurger's original Dual Chamber Reflex - IIRC ~3 cF total but lost drawing (re-hashed by Marsh in Speaker Builder) - not sure if any tonal advantage -
man..how do i get adopted into YOUR family! you've got one lucky bro!
