I purchased this player new in March of 01. Two years (exactly to the day) ago I replaced the laser assembly because it wouldn't read the SACD layer. Now my player is doing the same thing again. Is that all these lasers are good for is 2 years? That certainly seems like pretty poor performance for such a device at this price point.
Follow Ups:
When mine stopped reading SACDs I ordered a sled. But when taking out the old one I noted the lens was dirty. It was cleaned, everything was put back together, and it is still working. Use a camera lens cleaning cloth.Worth a shot.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try the realignment and see what happens. When I did this before it didn't correct the problem but it is certainly worth a shot.
I've had the same problem(s). The realignment procedure worked the first few times, but the problem eventually turned into a failure to read any disc until I replaced the laser. When my player was failing to find the SACD layer on dual larey discs, however, I was able to trick the player into find the SACD layer by first briefly playing a single-layer SACD disc and then playing the hybrid.
But it's almost certainly not the laser itself. The transport in the 9000ES uses a mostly plastic structure and gears etc and seems to warp itself out of shape across time to the point that it cannot still auto-align.The same transport is used in the Europe/Asia/Australia XB940QS player, but not enclosed in the metal case as in the 9000ES, and in six years my own 940 has had 3 new transports and could use another.
But it's well worth trying the re-align procedure as provided by audioeyedoc's HUGEdownload.
Try an auto alignment to see if that helps if you have the manual. If not-the link is below to get it.An sacd and a cd is all you need.Mike
Definitely worth a try -- it worked for me.
Did you replace it yourself, or at Sony repair? Do you live in a dry, desert area? Do you have a dusty room, dogs or other pets that bring dust and dander into the home?
It could be, that the laser is being replaced when all it really needs is the lens to be cleaned..
just a thought..
I had it replaced by a Sony authroized repair center because it was still under warranty. I don't live in a dessert area (live in the midwest) and the room has some dust but not large amounts. When this first happened I did try cleaning the laser but that didn't work. When this happened the first time there were many posts about this happening with the unit. I don't think mine was an isolated incident. What I find interesting is the player is 6 years old and it's time for a second laser replacement. It really relates only to the SACD, although if it progresses the same way as before it will get gradually worse until the DVD doesn't always read discs.
I have the same problems with my 9000ES, sent it back to the factory 2 years ago to have the drive replaced, as it stopped playing the sacd layer on dual layer disks. The problem started up again 6 months ago. Now I just the auto align function in the service mode and it works everytime.
