I have a Sony SCD-1 player and I just had the VSEI 5+ mods done. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to fully break in. I have about 20 hours on it, and at this point the sound ranges from very good at times to not so good with weak bass. I know that the sound comes and goes until fully broken in.
Follow Ups:
Whilst I still think vinyl is better, I am confident that the VSE L5+ is as good as it gets for SACD. My SCD777ES sounded pretty good from the time it came back from modding. I am now 10 months into ownership so I guess that means I've heard nothing to suggest that break-in takes place at all. Oh dear, does that help?

Please re-send your email regards to VES 5+ mod. It was deleted by accident. Thanks,
I've the VSE 5+ mod done last year to my 777ES and it took about 50-100 hrs of burn-in.
Stang, how would you describe the sound of your 5+ mod after full break in?
Its tough to describe the sound but the high and low are well extended, and the bass is well defined and your bass problem should go away after about 50 hrs. Greatest improvement was to the midrange.
on the changes it brought about for both redbook and SACD playback? Many thanks in advance....

Well, the stock player fell into the category of "pretty good, but maybe I'll opt for something better later."The L5 mod creates more like a "pry it out of my cold dead hands" kind of reaction.
While this and that improved, the main effect was stripping away level upon level of whatever it is that keeps the minute detail of a recording from making itself apparent. In a nutshell, things sound a lot more real. Even RBCDs can sound plausibly like the master tape, if not the actual performance.
Going from L5 to L5+ shouldn't have any effect on the RBCD performance. I am trying to work a trip to greater Schaffhausen into my schedule for that surgery.
As for break in, things were still improving (in lurches) 6 months after the mod. So think what you have to look forward to.

So far I hear much more detail in the music (almost to the point of being scary. Bass has varied from almost non existent to very strong and powerful. I have also noticed that each instrument is very prominent in it's own space in the sound stage. I still have a long way to go before I hear the full effect of the 5+. I had the level 2 mod and have moved up to the 5+. I will say that I love what the VSEI mods do for the SCD-1.

You're welcome to audition my if you're close to Southern Cal. area
I think the stock SCD-1 is pretty good, definitely a step up from my previous Theta Miles in terms of detail retrieval and soundstaging, but agree with others that the sound leans a bit to the dry/analytical side. I wouldn't want to do the mods unless they provided a bit more musicality.Slowhand, I'd love to hear your reports as the player burns in....
Cheers....
