Hi,My two cents I owned the Esoteric X-03 and the Marantz beat it hands down and the SA60 is not in the class of the X-03.

The Esoteric never came to life in my system. It was not involving, hype upper range and lacking dynamics, for the money the X-03 was a big disappointment and not a good value at all. It did have good detail. The Cary 306 SACD player was much better and cheaper to purchase, but it had lots of quality issues where I had to give up on it, and I really liked it a lot.
The Marantz SA-7S1 was like having the best of bth unit in one package, it is open, natural, detailed, great bottom and a clear and grain free top end.
The best depth of any cd player I have owned in 20 years, and it brings out the best I have heard in red-book cd's and that includes my Linn CD12 that I felt was one of the best I have ever heard.
The Marantz is so good that I no longer even think about replacing it due to finding some fault, it just sounds right. It does not sound digital at all and that takes some getting used to if you have not heard a cd player like the Linn CD12.
I would say most CD players sound digital in some ways and you get used to it, so when you hear a non-digital unit like the Linn CD12 and currently the Marantz SA-7S1 you will understand what I mean.
The unit does cost a few dollars, but it is a unit you can buy once and forget about the constant thought of having the need to upgrade.
The rest of my system: McIntosh C200 preamp, MC402 Amp. Speakers Dynaudio Confidence 5's, all cables MIT Magnum 3 and Oracle Z111 power cords.
The Marantz should be on your list for a state of the art cd player.
"The unit does cost a few dollars, but it is a unit you can buy once and forget about the constant thought of having the need to upgrade."This is a new player, I wonder if Marantz has done a better job this time with the transport design to ensure a trouble free service, their other players had continuous problems with transports.
They did the smart thing they build the transport themselves, no OEM unit.
