LOL. One might think that in regard to performances of Mahler's music you have now entered the new age of darkness. :-)Sorry I couldn't resist. I never got onto the SACD carousel, but I like to peak in once in a while.

'Dark Ages' experienced in Europe, a period of time when cultures, countries, religions, and peasants suffered from the result of political chaos. I believe his reference ws intended to be figurative as mine was nothing more than a kindly intended play on his words to express my feeling that the quality of performance should not be sacrificed for the sake of a recording playback format. Of course that was just my opinion.Of course I can't speak for Mr Lang, who might well explain his reference to you.
While it was certainly not my intention to hold it up as a classic analogy for even a fleeting comment my reference to the "Dark Ages" (early Middle Ages roughly 500 AD to 1000 AD) was a play on words and a gentle fun poke at the CD medium in its early years, say (roughly 1983-1993).The "Dark Ages" in Europe was considered a time of cultural regression and repression. Well for me, personally, the early years of CD (1983-1993, although I actually purchased my first CDs direct from Japan in 1982) was the absolute nadir of my in home music listening experience. I considered it a clear step backward in the quality of music reproduction. And like the European "Dark Ages", I didn't realize how bad things were (musically) initially. Sometime in the early 90's, I found myself mired in bad sound, and I simply gave up on CDs (and my “Class A” CD player) and went back to Lps, which I had never abandoned, except for purchase.
Some here in this forum and elsewhere have argued convincingly, and I have since learned on my own, that CDs as a medium, are now damn good sounding and that I, may have given up on them too soon.
Nevertheless, with the advent of SACD multi-channel, I, for me personally, am now in the absolute zenith of my music listening experience, ever. (I dare not equate it to the Renaissance :)
My “Dark Ages” reference was also an in fun follow up to the post (link below).
