Just got my SCD-1 back a month or so ago from Sony and this was exactly my experience, they even sent it back 2 day air when I requested it, at no extra cost. Very pleasant experience. My unit is good to go for another 6 yrs.An interesting comment from the service dept was "they only see about 2 units a year. Not sure if this is a good thing or not, at that rate how long would they stock parts, but at the very least it's a testament to Sony build quality!! Wish I could say the same about my Sony 42" LCD, should have just bought the XBR, but I digress off topic!

Glad to hear the good news. Perhaps this will stop the rumors, what did they do for your SCD1.Yes, always buy Sony top of the line gear, the XBR is the way to go. I have a KV36XBR250 CRT. Better picture then any LCD or Plasma at any price.
But that another story for another time; here in the naked city.
Based on the receipt, Sony replaced the Spindle motor and the Laser Pickup along with a firmware update. I also had them clean and lube the Sled Motor, as it seemed to be laboring. It came back running as smooth as glass. All for the low price of $254 delivered.And yes, the CRT XBR is a great TV(best black levels I've ever seen), I have a friend that has the 32"(?) and he loves it. Only problem is it weights a ton(literally)!!
The only thing going ofr LCD or Plasma is lack of weight, in all other picture matters CRT rules.This shows you that the consumer cares more looks than picture quality and that what drives the market place, You might as well by a rear projection TV, the picture quality cannot be any worse.
Good to see you unit had the once over, that is what is great about sending it to Sony service, they know what needs to be done and they just do it.
Here's how to check:* Set the CD1/CD2 switch on the remote control to CD1.
* While pressing the TEXT button on the set, press the CHECK button on the remote control.
* A 15-digit number will be displayed. The left-most 4 digits imply the microcomputer ROM version.
Example: If "200006100FFFF3C" is displayed, the ROM verison is 2.000.
* To cancel the ROM version check mode, while pressing the TEXT button on the set, press the CHECK button on the remote control.

Excellent, that is the part number for the v2.53 ROM chip.You got a great deal for the price you paid! That chip alone is $70.
You got a pretty good deal from Sony at $254 for a spindle motor and laser replacement - those 2 parts alone retail for about $340. My SCD777ES is going into the shop for a periodic cleaning and lube next week. I have this done about every 18 months or so at a local pro audio dealer (Full Compass, Madison, WI) who has a top notch service department which is also a Sony authorized repair center. So far, I've not had any of the problems described by others on this forum, and maybe regular maintenance has helped keep the unit healthy. But if my sled motor expires, I will have to pack it up and send it off to Sony, if my local folks cannot obtain the replacement part. Did you send your unit to the Laredo, TX Sony center? Were they responsive to phone calls? What materials did you use to pack up the beast for the trip?
I did send it to the Laredo, TX Sony center. The procedure is fairly simple, done online, that generates contact information and a repair order. Then just ship...one caveat here, do not ship in the original box(if you still have it) Sony will NOT return ship the player in the same box!! For some reason, they can't seem to keep track of the container it came in. Use a generic double box with thick foam padding(all 4 sides) and bubble wrap the unit and it should be fine. Do not include your remote, power cord or CD weight, as they will just serve to bang around inside the box and could cause damage, Sony has these items if needed for the service.Customer service contact(e.g., email and phone) during the whole thing was first rate, I received 3 reports, one upon arrival, one after diagnosis and a last one before shipping out. Sony completed repairs in 3 days and I had it back on the 5th(as I requested air service return). But I did pay for 3 day air to the service center, not willing to go ground from the east coast to TX; expensive yes but a small price to pay for piece of mind!
Player was return in perfect condition and I was amazed on how good it sounded with a new laser. I had actually thought about doing a mod beforehand but that urge quickly passed after I heard the unit upon return.
