Genesis, to me, was not necessarily known for providing the world with excellent recordings of their work. I was looking for infomation about the 2-channel layer and whether we could look forward to new and improved mixes/sonics. The CD's I have from their work are not the greatest recordings. I have no Genesis vinyl so I cannot judge that. Also I think that Police, Elton John and Peter Gabriel SA-CD's are not doing justice to the format. In my opinion these SA-CD's add nothing sonically that could not have been achieved with RB-CD 'done right'. Why would Genesis be different? I hope I am wrong. Maybe someone can shed some light on this that will show me the error of my ways.
Follow Ups:
I have one or two Genesis albums on vinyl (and also a few Phil Collins). They sound pretty good. If the new SA-CDs sound anything like them I'll be very happy.*** Also I think that Police, Elton John and Peter Gabriel SA-CD's are not doing justice to the format. ***
Huh? They sound great to me (again, comparison to vinyl, where I have the equivalent).
If your point was that a well mastered CD sounds good, I don't disagree with that. But it doesn't mean that it's not possible to hear additional benefit from SA-CD.
I think you interpreted the meaning of my post correctly. If it takes SA-CD to get better sounding verions of the Genesis oeuvre, great.
They pioneered the "bright, aggressive, and glary" sound. Lots of EQ and deliberate tape over-saturation.The mix sounds "dated" and "processed" to modern ears, but very popular in the 80s and many bands/engineers tried to copy it.
PS - currently listening to "Invisible Touch" on LP - forgotten how bright the mix was - would probably sound good on a Walkman I think!
..is what I hear when I listen to my "Definitive Edition Remaster" (a laughable moniker) version of 'A Trick Of The Tail'. Don't get me wrong, I really like Genesis. Great music, good memories. Maybe'll pick up some vinyl to compare. And you are right that the mix sounds dated and processed. If that is how it was intended so be it. I bet that the vinyl sounds better than the CD. We'll have to wait for the SA-CD to find out what they have done with their master tapes this time. A better version of glary and bright, or a complety new effort where acoustic guitar sounds actually like one instead of a National guitar played inside an oil drum :-)
With Genesis the sonic quality are generally inversely proportional to the material. Old Genesis - good/sometimes great (Dance on a Volcano) music, bad sonics. Later OK music much better sonics. Phil Collins, Face Value is good on both accounts and the only solo I have.
