Hi I have a 8260 and was wondering if any of you have a recommendation on where to get it repaired correctly(the first time :))Its of course doing the read errors and wont read but a couple of my sacd's.I bought it used so its not under warranty-and was hoping not to have to spend much to fix it as at that point I might as well buy something new.Well thx for any advice.
Follow Ups:
My problem was slow disc reading after being powered up for a long period. I decided it was heat related. Both my 2002 vintage machines do it.
I suspect most have worse problems, I have disconnected the MC top board and only run two channel. So a lot less heat is generated.
Sent one to Marantz service and they supposedly replaced whole transport, repaired the tracking circuits, and installed updates.
I looked and all I could identify is the addition of ONE 1K resitor. The player does not exhibit slow reads as much as before.
But I installed a new Tent Clock circuit in the other player and it now reads faster also. Adding a Tent clock to the "repaired" player did not seem to effect read times.
Nutshell, the Tent clock was 100.00, Marantz charged 200.00. Both seemed to help the player read the data easier if on for a couple hours. But both player read all my SACD's prior to changes.
For some reason, it took longer to read the CD's, the SACD's always read fairly quick.
If you only listen to two channel, you might consider unhooking the power and data cables going to the top board. There is a lot of heat being generated by all those discrete components.
My 8260 is slow at reading redbook CD's as well, but plays everything.
I find the MC a true bother, and kinda wonder if you leave it alone; will it still play in two channel? Otherwise it's been a great unit.

Gary,
The 8260 read cycle is thus, MC, stereo sacd, then cd. Cd's always take longer as the transport always looks for the sacd data first.
Disabling the mc board does not effect the stereo board at all.The early 8260's generated a fair bit of heat. Since my repair, this seems to have been alleviated. The repair I had done here was simple, maybe just the same 1k resistor as George's, and charge was only 100 AUD, including labor.
Thx for the link.I read all the other posts on the 8260 before I asked about getting it repaired, nothing did any good its still the same.Well thx alot I'll send it in and see what happens.
Sending the unit in is the surest way to getting things fixed. I'm in Australia and took mine in to Marantz Sevice Center for the fix. If your laser is okay, repairs shouldn't cost much, and you should have no further troubles.
chances are your player (like mine) is in need of major repairs/updates to both the hardware and firmware.Be prepared to spend upwards of $200 with Service Wide Technologies, but it will be money well spent. In the year since I had the player serviced, it has read every disc flawlessly that I've fed it.
