In Reply to: Is Telarc abandoning DSD recordings? Mr. Bishop? posted by Phil W on January 13, 2007 at 10:46:55:
We have recorded every Telarc classical project in DSD since at least 1998. We continue to do so. While maintaining the concentration on achieving the best-possible direct-to-stereo mix, every session also has a direct-to-surround mix.The vast majority of Telarc-produced/engineered non-classical projects are also recorded in DSD. We've gone to a lot of extra expense and added effort to have this capability and to not just go the ProTools route as everyone else does. I hope it shows in the end results on our releases!
CMG has not said one word about what Telarc records or how we record it. Glen Barros & CMG should be commended for that.
Lastly, SACD could disappear today and we'd still be recording in the DSD format. It's simply the best way to record our masters, even if no one else cared.
Best Regards,
Follow Ups:
I was concerned about this issue because the DSD notation has disappeared from both SA-CD.net and several upcoming classical releases on the Telarc website; moreover, the number of recording companies producing original DSD recordings has diminished, in part I presume because of the disappearance of Sony subsidies. While others in this forum will disagree with me, I think DSD recordings are superior to PCM recordings--all other things being equal, of course. I certainly own some excellent PCM to SACD recordings, as well as some poor DSD recordings. My assumption is that most SACD purchasers (including classical) don't much care about the provenance of a particuar recording as long as it sounds reasonably good; it would be interesting to know just how many have a strong preference, as I do, for DSD- over PCM-sourced SACDs (again, all other things being equal).
I have almost every Telarc classical SACD in my collection, as well as some non-classical discs. The fact that all the classical discs are recorded in DSD is an important part of my purchase decision. In any event, I assume Telarc has done some research or studies as to whether this is an important issue for SACD purchasers, particularly classical ones.
Keep up the good work at Telarc. You may have noticed in a recent thread that I praised your Kullervo disc as possibly the finest Telarc classical SACD to date.
I am most concerned with Classical releases being pure DSD or DSD releases from good analog masters. I'd like to see other kinds of music on SACD but I feel Classical benefits the most from it -- not to say that Jazz does not benefit greatly as well.
and make it out that SACD is disappearing at least by next week.
Thanks for the comment. To clarify:As can be told by the recent announcement of 15 new Telarc/HeadsUp SACD releases (so far) in 2007, both Telarc and HeadsUp are committed to releasing our top projects on SACD. We don't see the format going away any time soon!
Best Regards,
SACD continues to have a devoted following, especially amongst discerning Classical and Jazz enthusiasts. We are thankful for labels like Telarc that continue to be dedicated to a higher standard.
