I think he said that he doesn't have the jewel box but that he would supply one.I agree the liner notes are a must, but if someone has a better, more efficient way of storing CDs, DVDs, SACDs, etc., more power to them. With respect to width jewel boxes certainly take up a lot more space than Lps and far more space the ultra thin CD cases (that provide equal protection) I often use for storage.

OK. Perhaps I jumped to a false conclusion. Maybe he didn't throw out the jewel box inserts. But why then would he go through the trouble of prying open the jewel boxes to remove the inserts, flatten them out and find some way to preserve them - only so that he can throw out the jewel boxes? I just don't get it. If you go through the trouble of collecting - and paying for - the discs, why not try to retain at least a small portion of their monetary value by keeping them complete and in good condition? Then again, many people throw away the original boxes and packing material from their expensive components even though it often results in a significant loss when they want to sell. At least that practice is more understandable, given space considerations. But you really have to have a small apartment to not have enough room to store a couple hundred CD jewel boxes. How about under the bed?
I think you are underestimating the size of some inmates collections. I have about 2000 discs in various formats, so the jewel boxes are a deal breaker for me.
You could be right. I only have about 1000 discs, and a 3500 sq ft house with a 1500 sq ft basement. Discs I no longer listen to regularly (mostly redbook cds) go in the basement in their original jewel boxes). So storage is not a problem for me. Still it just seems odd to throw out the jewel boxes.
