Hi!
I just bought the Oppo 970 SACD player. Could you please recommend some SACDs for jazz, acoustic and classical music that best represents the medium?
I am interested about both musically and recording quality.
Thanks,
Dan
Follow Ups:
This is an excellent recording. Minimalist acoustic guitar and bass with nice singing by Muddy Waters. Buddy Guy plays a good bit of the guitar material as well.Looks like you can purchase a used one as low as $9.90/USD.

Chances are you will end up with the regular cd version using the Amazon marketplace.Seek out the Classic records DAD of this title. It's better than the SACD.
"Chances are you will end up with the regular cd version using the Amazon marketplace. "This has happened to me before when buying used, but the vast majority of the time I get the selection I ordered - including my own copy of Folk Singer in DSD. I've purchased a large potion of my collection used, and have saved huge as a result. It is worth the occassional shipment of the wrong product in terms of overall cost of software - easily. Also, most of the sellers that have screwed up my orders have refunded me without requiring me to send the merchandise back.
Potential of DAD format notwithstanding (I like DAD recordings also), my DSD copy sounds analog-like and is one of my favorite recordings.
Here are a few more good DSD recordings:
Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 String Guitar
Nickel Creek (Nickel Creek)
Jorma Kaukonen - Blue Country Heart
R.L. Burnside - First Recordings
T-Bone Walker - T-Bone Blues (electric but well played and recorded)
Albert King - I'll Play the Blues for You (also electric)

HowdyNot for everybody :) Tho I prefer the SACD, DADs are pretty good in general for me and certainly better than Redbook. Right now I wish I could find about 40 DADs that I lost in some random box when I moved :(
Has anyone tried jazz SACD's from DMP label? I have some of their CD's and they are up there with the best.
HowdyIt's one of my demo discs and more people want to get it for themselves than even "Blues in Orbit".
HowdyPerhaps it's a cop-out but I don't read software reviews and I don't write them. I enjoy almost any music (perhaps I have no discernment on this subject :) I'm more comfortable talking about technical things, e.g. hardware.
I have 7 of these and they have a lovely, natural sound.

Steve Davis Project, "Quality of Silence". Steve Davis is the drummer.
To this list I would add the new Mahler 2nd with Fischer on Channel Classics, which, along with the Mahler 6th from the same forces, is absolutely stunning in all ways. It easily bests the Slatkin Mahler 2nd that I had listed. There's also a newish recording of Liszt solo piano works on Avie with Markus Groh that's sensational as well.
And, there's been much talk here recently of the new Beethoven symphony cycle with Haitink on LSO Live. I love the performances (especially of nos. 5, 7, and 9), which are performed with great intensity and urgency, and recorded with immediate and often startling impact.
You might want to explore the other posts in the thread below for more recs.

Here is a description from www.acousticsounds.com:"This album, recorded in 1976, has been regarded as "The Best Jazz Recording of the Century"! Most audiophiles all over the world should have already be in possession of one. Its musical artistry and sonic excellence have few peers. With the blessing of the latest mastering technology in Super Audio, this recording has come out in its unprecedented musical glory! Give yourself a justifiable treat - Get one as quickly as you can!"
It's a matter of taste so who am I to disagree with your recommendation, but before one spends 60 dollars one might be interested in reading my review on SA-CD.net :-) ....
is an album that is a bit controversial. It is an audiophile classic as it has always been produced with a high degree of attention to sound quality. However, it is hardly one of the the Great Jazz Albums. That being said - I like it. The music is played very well and neither the clarinet nor the alto sax come off as strident on my system. In both sound very good to me. I do not own the XRCD so I can't compare it to the SACD but I find the sonic quality of the SACD to be very good.
For the jazz pop end of the musical spectrum, I would add these:Eden Atwood "This is Always" and "Bossa Nova Sessions"
Both tip-top sonics and fine performances, small
ensemble, "song standards" jazzTierny Sutton "Something Cool"
Also, small ensemble jazz vocal standards.Susanna McCorkle "From Bessie to Brazil"
Splendid collection of singer-song standards, very
good soncis.
Yorma Kakonen "Big Country Heart"
Uptempo country jazz (is there any such thing?) and
blues. Wonderful sonics.Blood Sweat and Tears
Amazingly good sonics for a record of this vintage.
Stay away from BS&T 3 -- it just doesn't cut it
musically.Steely Dan "Gaucho"
One of the very few
pop/rock records that features superior sonics.Beck "Sea Change"
Another of the handful of rock/pop records that
don't disappoint sonically.Joe Weed "The Vultures"
One of the sonic champs. Splendid pop instrumentals,
from movie themes, to beach music, to Booker
T's "Green Onions"Ella Fitzgerald "Ella and Louis"
Oldy but goody. Sometimes, it's a bit edgy sonically.
But the voices have tremendous presence, and the
material and the peformances are sensational.
Both of the "Yo Miles" SACD doubles. They're a great price too.
Mussorgsky/Pictures At An Exhibition and other Russian Showpieces
Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony Orchestra
RCA Living Stereo
Also from a Rock, Jazz, & Folk perspective:- Beck - Sea Change
- Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
- Diana Krall - The Look of Love & When I look in you Eyes
- Eleanor McEvoy - Yola, Early Hours, Out There
(you may have to search for these: Yola (Blue Dandelion Records
MSMSACD-113), Early Hours (Market Square Records MSM51SACD-128),
& Out There (MOSACD 303)

Thank you all for your recomendations!!

See comments at link below. Also, there seems to be almost universal agreement/acclaim for the new Chesky "New York Sessions". Count me in that group. I talk about two of them in detail in the "Jazz Comparisons" thread just below.

IMO, you'll find that well-engineered/produced DSD-sourced recordings will make the most of SACD. DSD is the recording format for SACD so of course a good DSD recording played in DSD is best. There are plenty of wonderful recordings from other format sources however.
As always, the music and performance must have the highest priority in choosing any release.
Best of luck to you. Happy New Year!!!
Best Regards,
are new recordings (instead of DSD remasters of 40 and 50 year old analog tapes), minimalist techniques, sound great and there is something there for every taste. Check them out at Chesky website. If their sound samples don't work (they were not working very well yesterday)check them out on Amazon.
Besides SACD net, check out the Audiophile Audition and Amazon websites for their reviews.I could give you my own personal recommendations, but I am mainly into reissues of older recordings, some of which have been criticized as having too much hiss, being pre Dolby or pre DSD analog recordings.
Still, if you are into jazz you must have the SACD of Miles Davis Kind of Blue. In classical, most of the RCA Living Stereo SACD hybrid reissues are worthwhile.
Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the club. Try these - sorry but the links will cause you some work copying and pasting, but I hope you have discovered sa-cd.net...?JAZZ
