In Reply to: DVD-A verses Hybrid SACD compare? anyone IYOP posted by FastEddy on December 14, 2006 at 17:01:15:
HowdyI just bought a Denon DVD-3930CI universal player for playing DVD-As. Since I have an outstanding SACD surround system and thousands of SACDs it's not a fair comparison, but I am enjoying some or my DVD-As.
The authoring inconsistencies on DVD-A drive me nuts (I can just put in a SACD and get sound, no button presses at all. Who knows what it will take to get hi-res playing when you put in a DVD-A and why in the heck do some DVD-As disable next track or typing in a track number?)
When my collection of great DVD-As gets big enough I'll probably have the Denon modded to get better sound, but after running 24/7 for a couple of weeks it's not too bad.
I like that I can buy any (audio) disc out there and play it. But for the best sound in my system it's still SACD.

You have thousands of SACDs ?
HowdyYep, lots of good music. I think I now have more SACDs than CDs :)

I think Ted has something like 3000 SACDs. Without intending to sound like I'm boasting ... have just over 1000.

I have only about half of that - if your collection is anemic mine must be on life support.

...what's that make my collection? Crypt dust?
The cycles available on DVD-A are no slouches! :)
Thanks for the tips re: DVD-A and "mode selection". I had not bothered considering that the operator/listener might hit the wrong button and get jilted out of some content or quality. I have a DVD-A player and seperate SACD player (on loan) and can't tell the differences (except between publishers & engineering philosophy). I do have to make a simple selection on my Panasonic (XR-70) amp to get it in and out of the overly complicated EQ modes for the various DVD-A verses DVD video formats, but had not noticed any differences ... other than the sound qualiy differences between (usually, but not always) 24bit/44k & 48k video tracks and the much better sounding 24bit/96k & 192k audio. Yes, Virginia, there is a difference, a big difference. (I have considered giving away my 16bit/44k CD collection.)
