Unfortunately I am starting to have problems with my SCD-1 reading SACDs/CDs. I believe it's production run is Nov 1999.I did a search on this site and have uncovered a number of horror stories fixing the problem and even more so the problems with Sony themselves in dealing with this issue in a professional manner(e.g. Racerguy and the problems he had with return shipping from a Sony service center)
My heart has sank into my chest, as I love my SCD-1 player but have read little to offer any satisfactory solutions or happy endings.
Can anyone offer any updated information if available re fixing the units(either at Sony centers or private shops), especially Racerguy, if you finally got your player back from Sony and compensated for the shipping issues and your unit repaired to your satisfaction?
Thank you for any help offered...

You might give these fellows in Madison WI a call if you live within driving distance. They have worked on my SCD777ES in the past with good results.
No but thank you for the information. It's always good to get references from past expediences.I'm on the east coast, actually not far from Bill Thalmann of Music Music Technology and might give him a call to see if he can help me out. Also might even consider going for the Level 5+ mod while I'm there if I can.
...i will 3rd the proposition that bill thallman is great....he drove over 4 hrs to hear my scd-1 when i was having trouble with my scd-1...fixed the problem and subsequently installed my 5+ mods to my player...great guy and superb at what he does....
The cause of the misreading problem is well known and comepletely understood. It is also easily and perfectly fixable so your player should function perfectly for another 5-6 years before needing another service.the machine is otherwise bullet proof - and I personally consider the misreading problem is a small price to pay as it is so easily fixed - when judged against the positive benefits of the players overall potential.
Regarding it's potential, I suggest anyone interested going to Positive Feedback Online
s website and checking the latest 2006 "Brutus Awards" list...
I have no axe to grind here, but I can second the thought that Bill Thalmann is a first rate guy who takes pride in his work and knows what he's doing. Highly recommended for any repairs or upgrades you can think of.
Bill Thallman did some MAJOR repair work on some VTL amplifiers that I own. He also did some repairs, and installed the "firmware upgrade", on Sony SCD-1. He also did the VSE "level 4.5 mod" to my SCD-1.I agree that he is totally honest, prompt and a pleasure to deal with. Also, I have never had any further problems with anything he has worked on for me. First rate!!
Sony did rebuild my player to about 98% of its condition prior to sending it for repair. In total I was without it for about 6 weeks. I wrote four letters, seven long emails, and spent several hours worth of my time on the phone with various people from Sony.My player was under warranty. That was the only reason I sent it to Sony in the first place. Your player is a couple of years out of warranty now. I agree with the other poster - take or send your player to an independent repair shop/technician. Don't waste your time with Sony's repair service.
You might stand to save a few bux on the original fix since it would be allready apart on his bench.
sony did a quick n good job 4 me though the unit was not under warranty. they called me once 2 tell me wat they r gonna do (at the same time i insisted they change the firmware. they had no idea wat i was on about cos they didnt even know there is a firmware change.)the 2nd time they messaged me 2 tell me the unit is ready 4 collection.
think they changed the sled n the firmware. price though a bit costly, i was happy it was in sony's experienced n capable hands.
btw i did not have the carton n they wrapped it with bubble rap thickly 4 me!
Wasn't it the "independent" repair facilility that Sony had contracted? There is still the one on the East coast that is fairly good..
Bristol Penn. Sony service center closed a while ago unfortunately. TX was my only option.

Not anymore. As part of Sony's consolidation in 2004/2005, factory service for the Sony ES products are now done in Laredo, TX.
Recently I had similar problems with my SCD1 and sent it to Richard Kern . He fixed it and upgraded to the the clock. It sounds great. No Sony problems.
