How do these recordings illustrate the relative merits and drawbacks of High Rez PCM and DSD on SACD? I have the entire stack but have yet to listen due to upgrading of my system and renovating of the listening room.
Follow Ups:
I think they demonstrate the fact that with proper recording techniques and proper mastering techniques an excellent result can be obtained. I think Chesky records in 24/96 PCM. There is no merit 'as such' in pure DSD or PCM for that matter. Correct me if I'm wrong folks, but it is my impression that most of us here have moved on from the 'pure DSD is better than PCM' debate. And if some people have not they should imho. The whole point is moot. The merit is in the business success - I speculate, but I would think that is partially the reason for Chesky releasing these excellent recordings as SA-CD.Cheers

Everything else being equal I prefer DSD over PCM. But I, too, I have moved beyond that debate but for different reasons than many. So, to drop a fly in the ointment, while audiophiles can debate PCM & DSD even on whether they can hear a meaningful difference there is no doubt (no debate) that the multi-channel makes a far more compelling difference (like it or not), even when subtle and even though the listener may not even immediately detect that it is, in fact, multi-channel.It has been my experience that a correctly mastered multi-channel jazz recording (and I would bet that the Chesky recordings are) played on a good set up significantly enhances the quality of the production when compared to the real thing. This can be particularly true for jazz as per my comments a few threads below on Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. And if one does not like the mix listen in stereo.

For both sound and music content.Jim Hall Quartet - All Across The City
Stan Getz Quartet - Pure Getz
Gene Harris Quartet - Listen HereIt's early in my evaluation but at this point I give the edge to these Concords for sound over what I heard so far from the Cheskys in this series.
Thanks. I've have had "Listen Here" for a while, but it has been a while since I listened to it. I just received two of the Chesky New York Sessions SACD with Christian McBride. On initial listening they sounded "dry", but I soon adjusted (or whatever)and they ended up sounding damn good

Illuminations and Triangulo. I prefer these to the New York Sessions also.I'll give a few more listens to the Cheskys and I'll let you my feelings again afterwards. I'm not saying that they aren't good recordings but comparatively speaking in MCH to the Concords and Telarcs....
While this review (click the link below) doesn't address the PCM vs. DSD debate per say, the reason it doesn't was that I found it to be a moot point. As Joel pointed out below, done right, there is no major differences between the two techniques. Why not listen to one of the Chesky's and get back to us with your impressions?

It sounds like English, but I can't understand a word you're saying.
