Yes, it plays.AFAIK analog 2ch out and HDMI digital out, Digital out is in PCM form and in several user selectable sample freq/bit depth combinations No optical digital out..
The receiving end should be able to process d/a from a HDMI source.
There are a handful of AVRs which can receive digital audio from HDMI and convert it to analog. Some of them even process it (mening bass and time management functions, room correction, applying 'sound fields', the like)
I think traditional 'audiophile' companies will not use HDMI for the foreseeable future.

Correction:
Of course there is MCH output, but not on analog. Only hdmi MCH out.
Sorry for the confusion.
or whatever the SACD MC digital 'standard' is (I don't know if there's even a viable spec....I haven't kept up) ?
No, as far as I know.
But if it is doable AND sellable then sure it will come.

.Sure looked like an early adopter "inexpensive" way to Blu-Ray.
Pretty Dumb, in my opinion, for SONY to make the SACD output accessible only thru HDMI. I know NOBODY that has a AVR that takes HDMI audio. They might as well just have deleted SACD from the unit.....its going to work out the same way .
This certainly isnt going to do any wonders for SACD.
I know NOBODY that has a AVR that takes HDMI audio.Almost all current generation A/V receivers accept multichannel audio via HDMI. That's the way of the present and future for HT. The PS3 will plug right in just like any other DVD player.
